The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Department of Medicine - Division of Gastroenterology, has an exciting opportunity for a Postdoctoral Associate to study innate immune regulation in the intestine with a focus on the role of TLR4 signaling in colonic neoplasia. This laboratory is under the direction of Dr. Maria Abreu located on the Medical Campus. Animal models, human tissues, and in vitro systems are used to examine the molecular regulation innate immune receptors in health and disease, especially inflammatory bowel diseases. The laboratory is also interested in the intersection between innate immunity, the microbiome, and the development of intestinal cancer. Germ-free animal models will be used to examine the role of host-bacterial interactions in intestinal homeostasis, inflammation, and cancer.


  • Carrying out animal experiments in models of colitis, particularly mice.


  • Carrying out primary epithelial and immunocyte cell culture on human and mouse tissues.


  • Performing DNA/RNA extraction and protein purification, PCR, qPCR, Primer Designing, PAGE, Western blot, flow cytometry, Elisa, cell culture, organoid culture, ROS measurement, Glucose tolerance test, Evaluation of inflammation in tissue samples.


  • Assisting in the design and planning of experiments in collaboration with other labs and other laboratory members.


  • Being able to assist and organize tasks for laboratory assistants.


  • Collecting and analyzing data into written and graphical formats for publication, presentation in meetings, and grant applications.


  • Participate at local and national scientific conferences by writing abstracts that summarize scientific findings and preparing posters or oral presentations.


  • Being able to interpretate RNA/DNA seq data from public databases or results of experiments obtained in the lab.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS



  • Ph.D. required in Molecular Biology, Immunology or related field.


  • No previous experience required.


  • Prefer 2-3 years previous experience working in a basic science laboratory.





Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:



  • Demonstrated adequate command of English is required (written and verbal).


  • Experience with molecular biology and immunology-based laboratory techniques such as PCR, Western blots, Elisa, DNA/RNA extraction and protein purification, PAGE, flow cytometry, cell culture, organoid culture, ROS measurement, Glucose tolerance test, Evaluation of inflammation in tissue samples.


  • Participate at local and national scientific conferences by writing abstracts that summarize scientific findings and preparing posters or oral presentations.


  • Being able to interpretate RNA/DNA seq data from public databases or results of experiments obtained in the lab.


  • Excellent sterile technique to work with cell and tissue culture is required.


  • Good mouse handling technique and experience in mouse models preferred.


  • Being organized, responsible, tidy, motivated and enthusiastic for basic research.


  • Able to work well as a team.


  • Working knowledge of the microbiome to integrate with epithelial biology
