Job Description

The Director of the University Writing and Learning Center (UWLC), under general direction, provides leadership and oversight for all administrative and instructional aspects of UWLC programs and academic support services. This includes recruiting, supervising, training, and developing academic tutors, writing tutors, supplemental instructors, and support staff. The Director consults with faculty on academic matters related to supporting student's learning and successful completion of coursework. The director also collaborates with and supports all university wide academic support, student engagement, student services and student success programs, and contributes to the university's efforts to increase student success and completion.




Responsibilities:





  • Strategic Planning: Coordinate the implementation of the center's strategic plan and provide leadership in developing and sustaining its mission. Develop and execute a strategic plan for assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of the UWLC. Utilize data and outcomes to support active and continuous improvement.





  • Administration and Operations: Oversee the administrative functions of the Center, managing daily operations, maintaining accurate records, and tracking student usage. Develop and implement writing workshops for faculty to facilitate student learning.





  • Establish Standard Operating Procedures: Develop and implement comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) to optimize UWLC operations. Ensure SOPs align with university policies and provide clear guidance on expectations and center guidelines for students, staff, and faculty. Regularly review and update SOPs to maintain relevance and effectiveness.





  • Tools and Systems Management: Oversee the utilization of partner software platforms, such as Tutor.com, WCOnline, and TutorLingo, to enhance student support services. Coordinate the integration and implementation of these platforms to provide students with access to 24-hour tutoring support and workshops to support their learning needs. Collaborate with vendors to ensure effective utilization of tools and systems, including training for staff and students. Regularly assess the effectiveness of these platforms and identify opportunities for improvement to better meet the needs of students accessing UWLC services.





  • Budget and Resource Management: Oversee the budgetary aspects of the University Writing and Learning Center (UWLC), including financial planning, expenditure monitoring, and resource allocation. Monitor the need for additional or replacement equipment, furnishings, supplies, and materials to maintain a conducive learning environment. Ensure fiscal responsibility and adherence to budgetary guidelines.





  • Staff Supervision and Training: Supervise UWLC staff, conduct staff meetings and training sessions, and develop workshops and information sessions for students, faculty, and staff. Host activities and events to increase student participation and engagement.





  • Professional Development and Skill Building: Implement and oversee regular professional development opportunities for UWLC staff, including training workshops, seminars, and other learning activities. Conduct regular assessment of staff training needs.





  • Teaching Qualifications for Writing Tutors Course: Possess the eligibility and qualifications to teach a specialized course tailored for writing tutors. This course equips tutors with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively support undergraduate and graduate students with writing-intensive assignments, projects, research papers, and other academic tasks.





  • Collaboration and Support: Work with Academic and Student Affairs, the University Library and other service programs to ensure seamless synergy for academic assistance, thesis and library support, and student success services. Initiate collaborations across all services within the Warrior Center for Student Success to ensure holistic academic and basic needs assistance. Establish the UWLC culture as a thriving and engaging learning community.





  • Faculty Engagement and Consultation: Partner with university colleges and facilitate direct involvement of faculty in shaping the writing curriculum and ensuring tutors, writers, and supplemental instructors support academic rigor and meet faculty education expectations. Foster collaboration between faculty and UWLC staff to align support services with academic standards and enhance student learning outcomes.





  • Committee Participation: Participate in various committees and working groups to contribute to the broader goals of the institution.





  • Marketing and Program Promotion: Promote UWLC and student success initiatives both on campus and in the wider community. Utilize various strategies such as social media campaigns, classroom visits and presentations, information sessions, and pop-up events to raise awareness about UWLC services and engage students. Collaborate with university marketing and communications teams to develop effective promotional materials and campaigns. Actively seek opportunities to showcase UWLC's impact on student success through testimonials, success stories, and partnerships with academic departments and student organizations.





  • Publications and Materials: Oversee, create, and update UWLC print and online publications. Manage website, materials, and circulated information to ensure accurate and up-to-date resources are available to students, faculty, and staff.





  • Other Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of WCSS, which may include contributing to special projects, task forces, or other initiatives aimed at enhancing student success and supporting the department, division, and university mission and goals.






Minimum Requirements:




  • Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.




  • Five years of related experience






Salary: $70,000



Hours: Monday - Friday; 8am to 5pm



Supervision of Others: This position generally supervises employees.



Work Location: This is not a remote position. The selected candidate will be required to work on campus.
