Purpose of Position

The purpose of this position is to teach students in the Honors Program through the cornerstone classes of Honors 101 and 102. In addition to teaching responsibilities, this position participates in departmental planning and programming, recruitment and retention events and activities, student engagement and community building events and activities, and serves on the Senate Honors Committee as a faculty representative.


Duties & Responsibilities

80% Teaching: The Honors Instructor will teach 8 courses per year. Courses to include the cornerstone classes HON 101 with a humanities emphasis and HON 102, the cornerstone class with a social sciences emphasis. Preference for additional ability to teach core courses in Women's and Gender Studies topics and texts. Classes will be primarily on campus, in person teaching, with the possibility of one online class per semester.


The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach undergraduate coursework with a theme-based, multidisciplinary approach, incorporating high impact practices and a variety of assignment types that encourage curiosity, intellectual engagement, and both critical and creative thinking.


20% Service: The instructor will participate in Honors Program recruitment events and will assist in attending and developing student engagement and community building activities within the Honors Program, in addition to serving on the Senate Honors Committee.

  • Ability and willingness to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the Honors Program.

  • Intersectional awareness and an ability to address issues of diversity, broadly, in all courses taught.


Minimum Requirements

  • Master's degree in a humanities discipline

  • Experience and expertise teaching humanities-based courses, interdisciplinary courses

  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in the field of specialty, e.g., M.F.A. or Ph.D., preferred.

  • Experience and expertise teaching in a social sciences discipline and/or Women's and Gender Studies.

  • Expertise in teaching research skills to undergraduates, e.g. writing and presenting, as well as a record of teaching from primary texts.

  • Experience or evidenced strong interest in teaching interdisciplinary courses, especially those which bridge the arts, humanities, and sciences.

  • A record of implementing innovative pedagogy and high impact practices in the classroom to foster active student learning and critical engagement around current issues.
