Role Overview

The Director, Engineering will lead our University Park Engineering team to support the business by delivering standard, new, and customized products to the market. This position will be responsible for developing the team, defining and implementing our technology roadmap, and delivering product/process improvements.

Location: University Park, IL

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the engineering group for fluid power (pneumatics/ hydraulics/ electric) components and system design involving fluidic, mechanical, electronics and software.
  • Own the development and maintenance of the engineering test lab for creating prototype and life cycle testing.
  • Responsible for development and updating of Product/Technology Roadmap(s) for the site.
  • Build and manage an engineering team that is efficient, project oriented, with a strong customer focus that provides Engineering Advantage solutions filled with more customer intimacy and greater returns.
  • Lead technology improvement onsite to ensure continued relevance of local technologies to Customer needs. Nurture innovative ways to provide Engineering Advantage to Customers while partnering with members of Management to ensure effective product development and executed design to meet company qualifications.
  • Responsible for creating and updating design guides.
  • Recommend methods, materials, and layouts for improvement based on manufacturing needs and capabilities.
  • Implement IMI World Class systems (Project Management, etc.) within Engineering. Develop systems and controls to ensure compliance with quality standards, while maintaining procedures and methods that will ensure quality standards are met.
  • Lead sustaining engineering activities to support production and quality.
  • Ensure engineering releases/documentation to manufacturing are timely, complete, and consistent with manufacturing processes to assure that IMI Precision Engineering products meet all customer requirements.
  • Provide direction of Company engineering goals and objectives, both short-term and long-term, through direct communication and guidance of staff associates. Establish the Engineering department's priorities and ensure timely completion, consistent with Company needs.
  • Act as a key member of the Leadership Team, contributing to the profitable growth ambitions set by the companies.
  • A Role model on Lean activities and actively support the company in its Quality System initiatives, including ISO Standards.
  • Monitor and approve department expenditures and budgets relating to projects and activities. As large capital expenditures are identified, make recommendations and seek approval from the leadership prior to purchases.
  • Monitor staffing levels to ensure appropriateness to current workload levels and ensuring timely results.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Critical Competencies for Success

Education and Experience
  • MSc or BS in Mechanical Engineering, and a minimum of 7 years working experience in an ideally multi-disciplinary engineering field (Fluidic, mechanical, electronics, Software).
  • At least 5 years' experience of demonstrated ability to lead and foster a development engineering team.

Skills and Competencies
  • Demonstrated record of managing cross-functional teams and achieving outstanding results in complex situations.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and team building skills, developing high performance teams with strong customer orientation and commitment to company values.
  • Ability to understand the concepts used to design and develop mechanical devices and mechanisms including Software and electronics, and how they interact with other complex sub-systems.
  • Experience with phase gate development process.
  • Proven knowledge in the use of GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis.
  • Former experience in the use of software modeling/analytical tools for Finite Element Analysis and/or Computational Fluid Dynamics.
  • Knowledge of multibody dynamics software preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks simultaneously, being able to think ahead and plan over a one-to-two-year time span.
  • Ability to analyze problems and find resolution at both the strategic and functional levels.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, growth-oriented and time-critical environment.
  • Self-starter able to adapt to manage team to achieve department goals and objectives.

Computers and Technology
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Outlook)
  • Working knowledge of ERP systems - Oracle/ Agile preferred.

Certifications
  • Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) and Fluid Power Certifications preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position will be responsible for, but not limited to, performance management, coaching, supervision, fostering teamwork, training, and development of one or more employees.
