Summary of Position

Sandhills Energy is seeking an experienced professional to lead our engineering and design initiatives as Director of Engineering. The successful candidate will oversee a diverse portfolio of projects, collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, ensuring adherence to industry standards, contributing to permitting processes, mentoring team members, and managing project budgets through value engineering. The candidate will interface with established subcontracted Engineering partners while simultaneously building our internal engineering capacity. Proficiency in CAD software, a keen awareness of industry trends, and excellent communication skills are essential for success in this role.

Responsibilities
  • Lead and coordinate solar PV system designs in collaboration with project managers and engineers.
  • -Develop conceptual layouts tailored to client needs and project specifications.
  • Generate preliminary drawings (30% drawings) for planning and review purposes.
  • Liaise with external firms to refine designs and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with technical experts to develop detailed construction plans.
  • Provide technical expertise and mentorship to team members.
  • Conduct quality checks and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
  • Assist in permitting processes and address design challenges as they arise.
  • Optimize system efficiency and stay abreast of industry trends and advancements.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Prioritize safety protocols and manage project budgets to deliver cost-effective solutions.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, renewable energy, or a related field preferred; equivalent certifications or extensive experience will be considered.
  • Previous experience in the utility sector, particularly in renewable energy projects, medium voltage and sub-transmission systems is advantageous.
  • Thorough understanding of solar PV systems and associated components.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar CAD software.
  • Familiarity with building codes, electrical codes, and relevant industry standards.
  • Knowledge of solar design software such as PVsyst, SketchUp, or Helioscope preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite for reporting and data analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail in drafting for accuracy and compliance.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Basic project management skills to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Familiarity with solar regulations and permitting requirements.
  • Passion for sustainability and renewable energy.
  • Certification in solar design and drafting, such as NABCEP PV Design Specialist, is advantageous.
  • Previous experience in solar design and drafting roles is beneficial.
