South Street Seaport Museum, located in the heart of the historic seaport district in New York City, preserves and interprets the history of New York as a great port city.

Founded in 1967, the Museum houses an extensive collection of works of art and artifacts, a maritime reference library, exhibition galleries, and education spaces, working 19th-century print shops, and an active fleet of historic vessels that all work to tell the story of "Where New York Begins." seaportmuseum.org

Job Summary
  • Join the South Street Seaport Museum Vessel Operations Crew! The 1885 Schooner PIONEER, TSA Sail Training Program of the Year 2012, has a 50+ yr. history of advancing careers on Tall Ships and in the Maritime industry.
  • On both PIONEER and the 1930 W. O. DECKER (the last remaining wooden tug built in New York), the Fleet Mate position is a chance to develop as a mariner in a challenging, supportive, and fast-paced environment. The Fleet Mate, under the direction of the Fleet Captain, supervises and leads the day-to-day sail operation & maintenance of the ships. Ample command opportunities exist for those with appropriate licenses. Organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated willingness to work with volunteer crew, students, as well as the public, are critical.
  • Learn and develop skills and experience in vessel operation and historic ship care in New York Harbor- one of the busiest waterways in the country.
  • Training and career development assistance is available through the museum.
  • Note that this is not a liveaboard position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Fleet Mate, under the direction of the Fleet Captain, supervises and leads the day-to-day sail operation & maintenance of the ships.
  • Manage and participate in all aspects of ship maintenance and operation.
  • A clear willingness to work hard, lead, and learn, good interpersonal skills, and a responsible and respectful outlook are required, as is participation in USCG-mandated random drug testing program
  • The professional crew leads volunteer trainees and passengers. Above all, the cornerstone of our program is a safe, healthy, collaborative, and respectful workplace.
  • The paid crew is expected to maintain current CPR 1st Aid certification. In-house training for this may be available.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Organizational and problem-solving skills, as well as a demonstrated willingness to work with volunteer crew, students, as well as the public, are critical.

Professional qualifications

  • Several years' experience in Tall Ships and/or Experiential Ed. is expected.

Preferred but Non-Mandatory Qualifications

  • USCG License Master 100 ton Inland with Aux Sail is preferred but not required.
  • Project management skills and leadership experience are always desirable.
  • Parallel experience might include teaching, particularly experiential education, carpentry, mechanical, metalwork, painting, etc. But again, those who are willing to work hard and learn can expect abundant on-the-job training.

  • Work effectively under a variety of conditions including heat, sun, wind, rain, cold and darkness.
  • Sufficient agility to move safely on the moving deck and in the confined spaces below.
  • The ability to haul on lines under strain and to lift 40 pounds.

Compensation/Benefits?The Fleet Mate position is full-time, year-round, with PTO, Medical/Dental/Vision benefits, an employee-funded 403b retirement plan, and other benefits.

While weekday, evening, and weekend hours are all part of the schedule, the Fleet Mate can expect to work 40 hours per week. Two consecutive days off per week are the norm.

The starting salary range is $45,000-$49,000, but compensation will be commensurate with experience.
