The Packaging Engineer is a results-oriented, detail driven member of a growing team with technical-requirements, sustainability-minded and continuous improvement approach. This position will lead and support packaging development strategies for new products, product line extensions, and existing product updates. Responsibilities include development and testing of new packaging for projects. Leads the development, review, approval and maintenance of packaging component and system specifications. Ability to identify and lead the execution of a wide range of Continuous Improvement projects using industry best practices in Lean and Six Sigma approaches. The Packaging Engineer leads, facilitates, executes, and manages team training initiatives and projects to reduce waste, cost, and variation through use of Lean and Six Sigma tools and methodologies.
JOB DUTIES:
Design bill of materials (BOM) to ensure product integrity and appeal under varying shipping and display conditions
Test, analyze, and select packaging materials based on feasibility, durability, cost effectiveness, and quality assurance
Develop solutions and specifications for needed plant product and/or packaging items
Help ensure packaging complies with all regulations
Evaluate effectiveness of product and packaging
Drive multiple projects concurrently. Collaborate with Product management colleagues early in new product development projects to ensure robust and on-time product launches through package design, material testing, prototype development, and performance testing
Coordinate packaging design changes to ensure they are systematically and thoroughly analyzed through proper justification and/or data collection for verification of performance requirements
Support cross-functional teams with R&D, engineering, project management, quality, manufacturing, product management, supply chain, regulatory, and marketing to ensure project success
Generate and support preparation of packaging specifications, capability studies, test plans, test protocols, test reports, risk assessments, and other relevant documentation
Trouble-shoot and resolve new and existing packaging issues involving designs, materials, and processes through creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions
Define packaging testing requirements and coordinate testing programs internally and at outside testing facilities
Drive investigative bench study experiments for packaging design as required
Perform root cause analysis, data gathering, and analysis related to packaging design, material, process failures, customer complaints, and corrective actions as required
Estimate production cost and effect of product design changes for management review, action, and control
Study operations sequence, material flow, functional statements, organization charts, and project information to determine worker functions and responsibilities
Plan and establish sequence of operations to fabricate and assemble parts or products and to promote efficient utilization

QUALIFICATIONS and education requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering or related field, or relevant experience
Intermediate knowledge related to paperboard, corrugated, flexible packaging films, thermoformed trays, injection molded parts, labels, and packaging equipment
Demonstrable proficiency in 3D CAD or SolidWorks software
Working knowledge of Lean 6 Sigma tools and implementation
Experience with MS Office
Continuous Improvement experience
Strong Communication Skills
Experience in a team environment
