Job Description:
McClatchy is seeking a Service Journalism Editor to lead our service journalism and high-utility reporting team at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The role is based in the Fort Worth area.
The primary goal of the service journalism team is to provide readers with need-to-know information and fact checks as well as stories that celebrate the best of their cities, region and state.
Among this editor’s main responsibilities are helping to ensure our service journalism team’s local and statewide stories and videos are useful and essential. We must meet our readers' curiosity and news needs.
The team is driven by readership growth and subscriber loyalty strategies. We use tools such as Google Trends and surveys to surface and answer questions readers are asking at the moment. Story topics may include explaining a city’s new food compost laws, fact checking a local official or polling readers for the best pizza in town.

An enthusiasm to collaborate is also a must, as this editor communicates and celebrates with service journalism editors across McClatchy’s news sites in addition to editors and journalists within the Star-Telegram newsroom. This role reports to the Director of News Audience Initiatives.

What you'll bring:
- Daily execution of audience-focused storytelling, fueled by a team of reporters working across multiple story approaches and digital platforms.
- Coordinate and assign story assignments, in collaboration with service journalism and newsroom editors, informed by search interest, social conversations and audience engagement journalism.
- Have excellent news judgment and journalism ethics.
- Have a passion for editing and writing, as well as video, audio and graphics.
- Demonstrate speed, competitiveness and SEO savvy through aggregating and storytelling tools.
- Excellent audience-focused headline writing.
- Work well in a multi-team environment.
Skills needed:
- Experience with audience tools such as Google Trends.
- Familiarity with analytics tools, such as Parse.ly and Amplitude.
- Ability to analyze audience metrics and identify the tactics that draw more local readers to our news sites.
Education & experience:
- College degree or equivalent work experience.
- At least 3 years of local news experience; editing and leadership experience is a plus.
