Job Description:

Northern Illinois University (NIU) College of Law invites applications for an opening for an Assistant Clinical Professor of Law who will serve as Director of our Business Law Innovation Clinic: https://www.niu.edu/law/academics/experiential-learning/clinical/business-law-innovation-clinic.shtml. The incumbent will collaborate with the NIU College of Business. This is a twelve-month full-time position fully funded by NIU. The ideal start date will be December 2025, to begin preparations for the Spring 2025 semester but may be later if circumstances warrant.

The Business Law Innovation Clinic (BLIC) provides legal assistance to not-for-profit organizations, entrepreneurs, small business owners from underrepresented communities in DeKalb and surrounding communities in Illinois, and entrepreneurship students from the NIU College of Business. Legal services include transactional business law matters including entity formation and incorporation, applications for Business Enterprise Program Certifications, and other business law matters commensurate with the faculty member's experience and expertise. The BLIC also represents clients with formation of non-profit organizations and applications for federal income tax exemption.

The Clinic Director will direct the daily operations of the BLIC, teach a clinic seminar course each semester, directly supervise the legal work of clinic students, and work in partnership with the College of Business to develop and deliver programming, including possibly teaching a summer course in the College of Business and/or creating content for revenue-generating. The Clinic Director will develop and maintain partnerships between NIU and its surrounding communities by engaging in outreach and leading educational workshops and presentations. Additionally, the Clinic Director will participate in development and fundraising activities for the BLIC and promote the clinic widely. Lastly, the Clinic Director will provide service to the College of Law, NIU, and the community through active participation in committees and professional activities related to bar associations and/or legal education.

Minimum Required Qualifications

J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.

At least three years of significant experience in the practice of transactional business law, particularly in those practice areas served by the clinic.

Admission to the practice of law and in good standing in at least one state or the District of Columbia.

Ability to be admitted to the practice of law in the State of Illinois within a reasonable time not to exceed two years after commencement of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

At least five years of significant experience in the practice of transactional business law, in the formation and representation of not-for-profit organizations, and/or experience teaching and supervising students in a law school clinic.
