Position Summary

Brief Description of PSU/School/Dept Student Legal Services provides FREE legal help to current PSU students. Our team of attorneys offers consultations, representation and advice on many legal matters. You can learn more about our services at https://www.pdx.edu/student-legal-services/

SLS common matters include Landlord/Tenant, Family Law, Immigration, and more. SLS staff consists of 4 attorneys, 1 paralegal, an administrative manager, 2-3 law clerks, student office assistants, and interns.
Position Summary PSU Student Legal Services is seeking a full-time Paralegal. The Paralegal supports SLS’ four attorneys and oversees student office assistants. The ideal candidate has good judgment, is detail-oriented, and has a passion for serving PSU’s diverse student body.

Typical Duties:


Legal Assistance & Attorney Support Including:
  • Supervising student office assistants in case management and intake screening.
  • Providing front desk reception (as needed, when student office assistants are not available or need additional support) and screening intake client requests.
  • Analyzing and interpreting legal documents (for example, court pleadings, Oregon DMV records, and Oregon eCourt Case Information records).
  • Conducting client fingerprinting.
  • Managing attorney calendars including litigation process deadlines, client meetings, and staff meetings.
  • Communicating with clients and other parties as needed regarding cases and office services.
  • Preparing legal correspondence for own signature or signature by an attorney.
  • Conducting legal research as assigned by an attorney.
  • Serving as office Notary Public.

Case Management & Administrative Duties Including:
  • Creating and maintaining electronic case files in Clio case management software, department computer drive, and other electronic and/or paper systems.
  • In conjunction with the Administrative Manager, reviewing and creating document templates and office processes for greater efficiency.
  • Training student interns and assistants on various office systems related to case management and document flow.
  • Monitoring office-wide compliance with SLS procedures.
  • Supporting office outreach efforts by attending and staffing campus events.
  • Other tasks or projects as assigned by attorneys or Administrative Manager.
  • Filling in for Administrative Manager when they are unavailable.

Comprehensive Review & Analysis Including:
  • Reviewing and analyzing Oregon Rules of Professional Conduct to ensure office compliance.
  • Maintaining the office client conflict check system.
  • Adhering to the highest standard of confidentiality, FERPA, and HIPAA guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications from Classification -A two year Associate’s degree in Paralegal or Legal Assistant Studies; OR

-One year of general college courses AND a one year nondegree certification program in Paralegal or Legal Assistant Studies; OR

-A one year nondegree certification program in Paralegal or Legal Assistant studies and one year paralegal experience or two years of subparalegal experience (e.g., legal secretarial, administration of laws within a judicial or administrative hearing process); OR

-Two years of paralegal experience; OR

-Three years of subparalegal experience; OR

-One year of Law School; OR

-A Bachelor’s degree in a field related to law (e.g., Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement).
Additional Minimum Qualifications for this Position
  • Organized and detail-oriented
  • Basic computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Google Suite.

Work Days/Hours Monday - Friday 8:30-5pm
Total Compensation Range & Benefits Statement The starting salary for this position will be between $22.99 and $26.44 per hour dependent upon qualifications and experience, with an excellent benefits package including 95% premium paid healthcare; a generous retirement and vacation package; and reduced tuition rates for employee, spouse or dependent at any of the Oregon University System schools : https://www.pdx.edu/human-resources/benefits-psu
