Job Summary: Under the leadership of the Executive Director of Patient Safety and the Director of Quality Operations, the WellStar Health System Safety/Quality Coordinator is a system leader with dependable cross-functional skills and expertise in patient safety leadership, safety culture, quality and robust process improvement. This individual has proven ability to analyze, interpret and display data and is well-positioned to reliably represent Safety and Quality leadership; serves as a subject matter expert and provides guidance to the facilities on behalf of System Safety and Quality Services. The versatility of this role allows them to support safety/quality matters across the system. Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: Patient Safety and Quality Program Operations (Including Safety Event Management) - Planning, implementing, directing and evaluating patient safety and clinical quality improvement programs throughout WellStar Health System. - Participates in development, training, education, and deployment of Safety-First program, including but not limited to: high reliability leadership methods; high reliability (Error Prevention) tools; Fair and Just Culture; and Peer Reliability (Safety) Coaches. - Provides input related to strategy to Executive Director of Patient Safety for overall direction for the Safety-First Program. - Serves as subject matter expert and provides coaching related to human performance theory, high reliability principles and the Safety-First program. - Reviews and updates policy and procedures related to Patient Safety. - Develops and delivers patient safety education at all levels. - Develops strong relationships with key leaders and collaborates with Safety Quality Staff at all facilities/campuses to build and maintain a culture of safety and learning environment. - Coaches team members and leaders from across the system on patient safety issues. - Promotes a culture of safety by coordinating system-level Culture of Safety Survey activities. Provides guidance for facility and system action planning efforts using the culture of safety survey results. - Coordinates activities related to participation in the Patient Safety Organization (PSO) across WellStar Health System. - Develops, reviews, and updates system vulnerabilities through safety event analysis. - Identifies safety issues through monitoring and reporting incidents - Ensures timely investigation of patient safety issues. Facilitates data collection, analysis, and presentation of patient safety trends to leaders as needed. - Provides primary oversight and leads safety event management/tracking for the system. - Actively participates in system common cause analyses; creates and/or supports the development of patient safety related reports to department and system leadership. - Assists in the implementation of patient safety initiatives and harm reduction strategies. - Actively participates in the safety event classification process, including weekly classification activities; leads the call as needed. - Recommends appropriate actions based on event cause analysis to the Patient Safety and Quality Team. - Provides guidance and serves as subject matter expert for review, analysis, reduction activities, and reporting of quality measures, including but not limited to Patient Safety Indicators (PSI), Healthcare Associated Conditions (HACs), and other measures as identified by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Robust Performance Improvement - Practices innovative design and systems thinking to improve measures of quality and safety for patients and team members across WellStar. - Facilitates robust process improvement to support the reduction of preventable harm within WellStar. - Develops measurement and improvement strategies for assigned areas. Creates tools for tracking and trending of safety events including the creation of A3s for implementing tests of change. - Analyzes safety event data from across the system and identifies trends for improvement initiatives. - Analyzes and reports on data collected from a variety of sources. Develops quality reports for specific groups with Safety and Quality. - Supports hospital performance improvement strategies through problem assessment and education. Regulatory Adherence and Compliance - Maintains current working knowledge and provides guidance to facilities related to applicable laws, regulations, statues, and best practice literature that affect the Patient Safety Program, including Georgia Medical Board, Board of Nursing, The Joint Commission (TJC), AHRQs National Quality Forum-Serious Reportable Events (NQF-SRE) and HIPAA. - Serves as consultant, subject matter expert, and facilitator, as appropriate, regarding patient safety initiatives including, but not limited to sentinel event alerts, National Patient Safety Goals (NPSG), system goals. - Strategizes with the Executive Director of Patient Safety to assure adherence to regulatory standards. Financial/Fiscal Responsibility - Demonstrates leadership in the areas of human resources, financial management, planning, directing, continuous quality improvement, institutional support and representation, and customer service. Trust/Engagement (Mandatory Content) - Builds a culture of trust and engagement as reflected in the Great Place to Work Trust Index Survey at a direct report, workgroup and hospital/entity level. - Holds leaders accountable for behaviors that create trust and engagement. - Performs all duties and responsibilities of this position in a manner that reflects the values of WellStar. - Maintains and strengthens relationships with physicians and assures their involvement in developing systems to assure the growth of the service and the cost-effective delivery of quality patient care in a manner that fosters patient and employee satisfaction. Required Minimum Education:


  • Bachelors Health Science or Bachelors Other or Masters Other


Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s): All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

    Required Minimum Experience: Minimum 3 years experience applying high reliability and safety design principles Required or total quality management methodologies Required Minimum Skills: Leadership, interpersonal, time management, change management. Must have the ability to work independently and with groups. Must possess a solid understanding of team dynamics. Skilled in Microsoft Office applications including Visio and pivot tables; willing to train for other analytical tools.
