Job Description:

The Ojibwe Language and Culture Teacher will plan, organize, implement, and evaluate classroom instruction that facilitates learning to speak and understand the Ojibwe language and develop students' knowledge and understanding of culture, history, art and values. Teacher will speak Ojibwe 100% of the time while delivering instruction. Work with OLC staff to develop the K12 OLC language curriculum.

QUALIFICATIONS

The Ojibwe Language Specialist or Teacher shall:

1. Meet one of the following education/experience requirements:
a. Hold a Bachelor's Degree and hold or be willing to work toward a valid Minnesota teaching license which may
include Eminence Credentials -and- have relevant experience or relevant background knowledge in teaching
Ojibwemowin in a K-12 setting. Applicants with this combination of education and experience will be
considered for an Ojibwe Language Teacher position.
b. Have relevant post-secondary education -or- successful experience teaching Oibwemowin -and- have
relevant background knowledge that will readily translate to successful teaching of Ojibwemowin in a K-12
setting. Applicants with this combination of education and experience will be considered for an Ojibwe
Language Specialist position.
2. Demonstrate a strong moral character and impeccable work ethic.
3. Show willingness and excitement in working with Native American children and youth.

JOB DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITES

1. Develop and implement Ojibwemowin Language lessons and activities with a wide variety of K-12 students and staff.
2. Document the work listed in Item #1 to assist in the development of a K-12 cultural curriculum.
3. Consult with and work alongside district staff to integrate Ojibwemowin into daily instructional routines, expectations, and curriculum.
4. Coach peers in connecting Ojibwemowin language-focused activities to core and specialist content standards, curriculum, instruction, and behavior management.
5. Use and apply a wide variety of developmentally-appropriate culturally-based instructional practices and teaching strategies to support students.
6. Collect, analyze and interpret formative and summative data.
7. Demonstrate effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
8. Work as an effective member of professional learning teams, grade level teams, and participate as a contributing member on site committees.
9. Engage in data-driven decision-making and data-driven instruction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

1. Engage and support students and staff in their learning by providing for a variety of learning styles and ability levels through both direct instruction and peer coaching.
2. Create and maintain effective environments for students' active learning.
3. Understand and organize language learning opportunities in a manner that aligns with other academic subject matter, curriculum, and state content standards.
4. Employ technology to enhance instruction.
5. Assess students for learning in accordance with district and state requirements.
6. Develop as a professional educator.
7. Communicate effectively with students, parents and staff.
8. Support and abide by school and district policies and procedures.
9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND ABILITES

1. Infuse Ojibwe language and culture as much as possible throughout all activities.
2. Utilize proper English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and speaking skills.
3. Knowledge of district policies, rules, and regulations.
4. Work with students, district personnel, and general public in a pleasant and cooperative manner.
5. Understand and follow complex oral and written instruction and complete assignments independently.
6. Analyze situations and take appropriate action regarding routine/emergency procedural matters without immediate supervision.
7. Plan, organize, and coordinate assigned tasks to meet established timelines.
8. Maintain professional confidentiality and work collaboratively with peers.
9. Possess knowledge of technology to present lessons, communicate with others, and keep records.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Stand, walk, bend over, kneel, crouch, reach, overhead, grasp, push, and pull in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings. Move, lift, and/or carry up to 50 lbs. to shoulder height.
2. Repetitive use of hands (i.e. fine manipulation, simple grasping, and power grasping).
3. Stand, sit, and/or walk for extended periods of time.
4. Demonstrate normal depth perception.
5. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, operate standard office equipment, and use a telephone.
6. See and read a computer screen and printed matter with or without visual aids.

VERIFICATION OF COMPETENCY

1. District application and professional resume completed and submitted.
2. Provide documentation of licensure credentials.
3. Provide the letters of reference from education professionals.
