Firefighter Basic - Classified Status Employee.  ($15.00/hour-$44,850.00/year) 
Firefighter Intermediate- Classified Status Employee. ($15.75/hour-$47,092.50/year)
Firefighter Paramedic- Classified Status Employee. ($17.33/hour- $51,801.75/year)

THIS POSITION IS GOVERNED BY A COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT

 

PURPOSE SUMMARY

Performs firefighting and responds to medical and emergency situations where life, property or the environment is at risk.

 

This is a safety-sensitive position.

Responds to fire alarms and performs fire suppression duties.
A. Lays and connects hose, holds nozzles, and directs fog, chemical or water streams; raises
and climbs ladders; uses portable fire extinguishers.
B. Makes forcible entry into buildings when necessary and ventilates burning buildings;
evacuates persons from danger; and performs salvage operations.
C. Participates in fire drills, and attends training classes.
D. Maintains an awareness of the location of fire hydrants, water system layouts, streets and
buildings.
E. Responds to and mitigates hazardous material releases.
F. Operates radio or telephone equipment to establish and maintain contact with dispatcher,
Medical Control physician, or other fire personnel.

 

Responds to emergency calls to render emergency medical care to patients.
A. Performs initial and ongoing focused patient assessment and physical examination.
B. Determines priority of patient care based on assessment finds; takes, records and monitors
patient baseline vital signs including temperature, blood pressure and pulse; manages
respiratory and cardiac emergencies to include performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation
(CPR), bag-valve mask resuscitation, or automatic external defibrillation
C. (AED); controls external bleeding with direct pressure; splints and immobilizes fractures
and dislocations for transport.
D. Removes or assists in removing victims from accident or emergency scene. Drive or ride
in medical unit to emergency medical call locations as instructed by dispatcher or
supervisor and relay patients to medical treatment facility.
E. Attempts to ascertain patients' pre-existing medical problems; employs a variety of
established emergency medical techniques, methods and equipment to stabilize patients for
transport; and prepares appropriate and relevant patient care documentation.

 

Performs general maintenance and upkeep of Fire Department property and
supplies.
A. Makes minor repairs to property and equipment.
B. Washes, hangs and dries hoses.
C. Maintains, tests, and operates firefighting equipment and apparatus, as assigned.
D. Maintains supply inventory for assigned unit, conducts preventative· maintenance and
safety checks of vehicle and emergency equipment.
E. Performs station or vehicle cleaning or maintenance duties as necessary, including general
cleanup, mopping, sweeping, and yard work.
F. Maintains and makes minor repairs to firefighting and medical equipment.
G. Maintains records of repairs and equipment assignments.
H. Complete forms and maintain accurate records, run and vehicle maintenance logs, fire
hydrant inspection and test records.
4. Participates in technical rescues, including high angle, water, trench, confined space,
and combined search and rescue.

 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES.
1. Attends specialized and periodic training to enhance skills and maintain certifications.
2. Conducts tours of station houses for civic and other interested groups.
3. Assists in controlling crowds and protecting valuables.
4. Performs other relevant duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS.
A. Education. High School diploma or equivalent (GED)
B. Experience. Volunteer or paid firefighter preferred, but not required. Bilingual
(English/Spanish) preferred.
C. Education/Experience substitution. In accordance with County policy.
D. Licenses/Certifications.

 

Required at time of application:

  • Valid unrestricted Driver’s License and defensive driving course within three months of hire.

 

Must obtain the following within six months of hire:

  • Completion of Dona Ana County Fire Academy
  • IFSAC or ProBoard Haz-Mat A/O
  • IFSAC, or ProBoard Firefighter II
  • IFSAC or ProBoard Emergency Vehicle Driver
  • IFSAC or ProBoard Vehicle Extrication
  • ICS 100 and 200; IS 700 and 800
  • NM Class E Driver’s License
  • Basic Wildland firefighter S130/190 L180
  • Minimum of NM EMT-Basic within six months
  • Preferred NM EMT-Basic, Intermediate or Paramedic or equivalent National Registry License (reciprocity must be obtained within 90 days) at time of application

E. Other Eye detect, background check, driver’s license history, post-offer medical exam.
Subject to mandatory drug and alcohol testing due to safety-sensitive duties.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of:

  • Practices, procedures and equipment used in fire suppression.
  • Communication and interpersonal methods and techniques to deal with the general public and County staff, which must be conducted with courtesy and respect at all times

Ability to:

  • Analyze emergency situations and to select effective courses of action, giving regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
  • Cope with stressful situations.
  • Learn and perform firefighting, rescue and emergency care practices, techniques, and methods and to apply such information to specific situations.
  • Interpret information accurately and make decisions according to existing laws, regulations, and policies.
  • Produce written documents in the English language with clearly organized thoughts using proper sentence construction, punctuation, and grammar.
  • Make minor equipment repairs and adjustments under supervision.
  • Communicate effectively; speak clearly and distinctly with the public and employees.
  • Successfully complete annual medical physical according to NFPA standards and successfully complete annual physical ability test for the appropriate assignment.
  • Able to drive emergency response apparatus and equipment to which assigned. Must have the ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus, climb ladders, work from heights, and work in confined places, toxic atmospheres, and extreme environmental atmospheres.
  • Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships.
  • Ability to work 24-hour shifts on a rotating basis.
