Job Description:

Director of Finance and Compliance
(Mostly Virtual Position)

Academic Search, founded in 1976, is a growing organization with a mission to build institutional capacity through leadership development, executive search, and executive coaching at colleges and universities. We pride ourselves on our collaborative and highly skilled team that focuses on providing an outstanding partner institution experience with a focus on equity and inclusion in all our work. We are seeking a colleague to direct and manage accounting, financial reporting, internal controls, and compliance. As a wholly owned subsidiary, some of the same basic functions are required for our parent organization, the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI). AALI is a premier leadership development organization for higher education administrators.

The Director will have a highly relational role with stakeholders inside and outside our organization. This position reports directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and serves as a trusted partner to the SVP on matters of accounting, reporting, forecasting, and compliance. About 90% of your time will be spent on Academic Search and 10% of your time will be spent on AALI matters. Whoever assumes the role must value autonomy in a remote environment, seek input and guidance from colleagues, be comfortable in and manage ambiguity, and be proactive in suggesting new ideas or solutions.

Accounting Operations: Our team is seeking a proactive Director who will create, maintain, and enhance relationships with stakeholders and service providers, both internally and externally. We have the services of an outside bookkeeper, but there are times when judgment is needed on candidate and institutional matters that require a strong degree of professional acumen and customer service. Above all, we seek someone interested in creating efficient processes for the betterment of our organization and an enhanced experience for our institutional partners, candidates, and organizational teammates.

Compliance: Like most businesses, we conduct regular reporting and filings on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis. In addition, the Director will ensure all the tax, corporate, and other organizational filings needed are submitted accurately and on time. Various states and organizations require accurate and timely monthly and quarterly reporting to remain in compliance with MWBE goals and general service agreements. We want to expand our data analysis to understand current business trends and prepare for the future.

Administration: The Director will also coordinate annual corporation filings with an outside partner. As some time is devoted to AALI, non-profit, and 990 experience would be useful. Tax preparation is handled by an outside tax preparer and the Director will work with them to coordinate all federal, state, and local filings. They will review all organizational contracts to ensure compliance and make sure we are receiving the best value for our dollars, handle various insurance needs, and other accounting tasks. Strong project management and organizational skills are desired to handle tasks and projects.

Audit and Controls: We undergo an annual audit, and the Director will manage the audit of AALI and Academic Search. Currently, we have strong internal control monitoring and seek a Director with a proactive mindset to protect our organization even better.

Equity and Diversity: Equity and inclusion are central to our organizational culture and mission. It is essential to our internal team, stakeholders, and our external partners that we foster equity through our work. We seek someone who is culturally competent, mindful, and who embraces working in a diverse and collegial environment; and who will help advance our initiatives focused on institutional equity and inclusive excellence.

The details:

We are looking for a professional with a career trajectory that demonstrates an ability to take the accounting reins described above in a mission-driven organization and who sees this position as a wonderful opportunity to contribute to higher education and leadership development. Ideally, that person has 5-10 years of professional experience in corporate and/or non-profit management. A demonstrated understanding of accounting, compliance, budgeting, audits, and financial leadership is needed. Exceptional stakeholder support is needed through organizational skills, task management proficiency, and project implementation.

A bachelor's degree is required. The preferred credential for this position is a master's degree, but we will consider all relevant credentials, training, skills, and experience that will combine in a candidate to help move the organization forward. Experience in or with higher education is helpful. A CPA is desirable but not required. We know that women and underrepresented individuals will often apply for jobs with less frequency depending on requirements. We have tried to make ours as flexible as we can and highly encourage anyone who believes they are a good candidate for this opportunity to apply.

The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $90,000, commensurate with experience, and subject to possible variable compensation as well. Excellent benefits include health, dental, vision, and life insurance; long- and short-term disability; paid vacation, holiday, and sick time; a home office setup stipend; and professional development opportunities.

This is a remote position, and therefore excellent internet connectivity is required. The workday schedule is negotiable while ensuring broad availability during East Coast hours. Travel is limited but includes occasional team meetings and the full organization-wide annual retreats.

Next steps:

Please submit a resume and cover letter to director@academicsearch.org that speaks to your experience with professional service organizations, higher education, and/or financial administration for compact, lean organizations. We do request a cover letter as a way to begin to get to know you and the unique skills you could bring to the team.

All materials will be held in confidence. The position is open until filled, and reviews of materials will begin immediately. No phone calls, please.
