The Director of Payroll, as a member of the HR Operations leadership team, provides strategic direction for payroll operations. Responsible for overseeing all payroll functions, including hourly pay across multiple locations, driver pay, and exempt pay, ensuring accurate and timely processing in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Implements tax credit programs such as WOTC, CAEZ, and New Jersey BEIP across all business units in collaboration with Tax and People departments. Works closely with field leaders, HR Business Partners, external partners, and department heads.
About the Role:
Designs, evaluates, recommends, and implements short-term and long-term payroll policies, processes, and system enhancements to enhance accuracy and efficiency. Provides proactive leadership and guidance to resolve payroll issues, directs local payroll staff, and oversees payroll processing across business units. Analyzes complex transactions, identifies issues, assesses risks, and implements solutions. Builds strategic relationships with internal departments including Accounting, HR Systems, People Data & Analytics, and Legal, and manages external payroll service vendor relationships.
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates thought leadership within HR Operations, maintains process documentation, and ensures standard operating procedures are current. Leads and coaches a team of diverse experience levels, fostering development and preparing team members for advancement. Participates in audits and communicates payroll developments to employees and business partners. Identifies opportunities for process improvement and risk mitigation, and ensures payroll data confidentiality and security in compliance with data privacy regulations.
Qualifications:
Over 10 years of management experience.
Extensive multistate payroll experience, 10+ years preferred
Experience managing payroll for 20,000+ employees with customized (Not outsourced) solutions.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration.
Workday experience required; payroll system conversion experience preferred.
Certified Payroll Professional or equivalent certification required.
In-depth knowledge of federal, state, and local wage and hour laws.
Familiarity with CDL A Driver component pay and related rates.
Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Experience leading payroll system integration projects.
