Under general supervision, monitors, and inspects equipment. Operates the steam and chilled water plant by adjusting and controlling steam and chilled water, performing water tests, and analysis.
Duties:
Monitors and inspects equipment to detect leaks or malfunctions and ensures the equipment is operating efficiently and safely
Performs maintenance on complex equipment
Determines causes of operating errors, determines what type of maintenance is needed, and discuss with the supervisor before performing maintenance on the equipment
Operates the steam and chilled water plant generation equipment including boilers, chillers, and cooling towers
Adjusts and controls the generation of steam and chilled water to ensure maximum efficiency of plant operations
Observes and interprets readings on gauges, meters, and charts to ensure the boilers are operating properly
Tests boiler water quality and takes any corrective action, including but not limited to mixing and adding chemicals to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits
Analyzes more complex problems and takes appropriate action to ensure the continuous operation of equipment and systems
Maintains logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including but not limited to test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work
May train other employees in plant operations and safety procedures
Keeps the plant operational when the University is closed or in case of steam and chill plant emergencies
Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the functions of any site support position to include assisting any skilled trade
Required Education: High School diploma or GED, AND:
12 months of steam and chilled water plant operation or related industrial plant operation experience
Preferred: 18 months steam and chilled water plant operation or related industrial plant operation experience
Certifications/Licenses:
State of Oklahoma Class II Boilers License or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date
Valid Oklahoma Driver’s License in order to drive University vehicles or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire date
Skills & Abilities:
Knowledge of water analysis and chemical treatments
Knowledge of safe operating procedures
Detail-oriented particularly when watching gauges and other indicators to ensure equipment is working properly
Ability to give full attention and understand complex written and verbal instructions
Ability to troubleshoot to determine the cause of complex operating errors and discusses with supervisor
Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify solutions or approaches to complex problems
Ability to use hand and power tools, control panels and switches
