About This Position
CJI is seeking a Senior Policy Specialist to join our restrictive housing team to provide training and technical assistance to state and local correctional agencies to safely reduce the use of restrictive housing in prisons and jails. Senior Policy Specialists lead and, at times, manage complex projects. Senior Policy Specialists act as specialized experts and provide direct technical assistance to clients and funders. Candidates must be able to work independently as well as part of multiple teams. The ability to multi-task in a fast-paced and virtually-based work environment is critical.

Duties / Responsibilities:
  • Lead and, at times, manage the development and implementation of complex adult and/or youth justice research, evaluations, and technical assistance projects with local, state, tribal and/or federal partners.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of presentations on adult justice issues to varied audiences, including line staff, mid-managers, executives, and policymakers.
  • Develop and manage relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Translate client and/or funder needs into clear and realistic assignments for the project team.
  • Develop and execute project work plans, timelines, and deliverables while working with Project Managers to delegate various components.
  • Help create and maintain a culture in which staff are committed to implementing evidence-based practices and policies, with a particular emphasis on racially just outcomes, in adult justice systems or related fields to improve public safety outcomes.
  • Be attentive to trends in the field and develop creative proposal concepts to address problems and improve systems.

  • Knowledge / Skills / Experience Required:
  • Five or more years’ experience in criminal justice research or policy and practice. Previous experience with prison or jail settings highly desired.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize and summarize large amounts of information.
  • Proven capacity to manage multi-site projects.
  • Prior experience leading or working with a project team.
  • Prior project management and supervision experience.
  • Proficiency in research skills, including both academic and policy research.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to the highest-quality work.
  • Highly developed writing and formatting skills.
  • Motivated and independent thinker.
  • Ability to interact with a variety of people, both in-person and virtually, in a professional and collaborative manner.
  • Ability to coordinate and respond to multiple priorities with tight deadlines.
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work flexible hours when needed.

  • Education:
  • Relevant bachelor's degree required.
  • Advanced degree in related field preferred.

Social Justice Services (SJS), supports those leaving incarceration to make positive, sustainable life transitions through residential and non-residential programs. Behavioral Health (BH) has worked to break cycles of violence, crime, and incarceration by providing client-centered interventions and support services to empower and strengthen individuals, families, and communities. BH provides domestic violence treatment and education, community reentry services, mentoring programs, and intensive outpatient programs. The Crime and Justice Institute (CJI) is a non-profit organization working at the local, state, and national level to improve public safety and the delivery of justice. CJI provides technical assistance, research, and other services to improve outcomes in policing, the corrections system, pre-trial, re-entry, community supervision, and juvenile justice.
