Description: Job Summary

The Office of Physical Resources & Planning (OPRP) provides complete and integrated planning and design services, construction management, and building renewal, maintenance, and operations management to maintain the physical resources of the FAS campus.

This position is responsible for directing the Undergraduate House Renewal Program. The goal of Harvard University's Undergraduate House Renewal Program is to re-configure each House to meet the complex needs of today's students, relieve overcrowding, improve privacy, and comply with current building codes. The renovations aim to enhance program spaces to support students' academic and social development better and upgrade outdated building systems and infrastructure.

Position Description

  • Responsible for staff supervision of approimately ten FTE's. Support efforts to control scope, budget, schedule aspects of projects, and ensure FAS sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction strategies and goals are incorporated into the program.
  • Provide guidance to the team on projects in early development, and throughout construction, including preparation of cost ranges, options analysis, and alignment with renewal priorities.
  • Manage Outside Project Management (OPM) consultants who are hired for full project management services, serve the role of Project Manager, and have direct responsibility for project execution.
  • Participate in University committees related to capital project delivery.
  • Provide initial review of submissions to the University's Capital Projects Review Committee (CPRC) for House Renewal projects and related enabling/domino projects, and to the Corporation Committee on Facilities and Capital Planning for projects >$15M.
  • Prepare for and present regular updates to senior level Executive Committee consisting of FAS Dean, Dean of Harvard College, and EVP of the University.


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical field related to construction, capital project management or the equivalent (architecture or engineering degree preferred).
  • Minimum of twelve (12) years progressive experience in capital project design, and construction management.
  • Experience in capital project development and construction in academic residential housing.
  • Knowledge of design and construction processes and familiarity with city, state, and federal codes.


Additional Qualifications and Skills

Capital project management in a higher education setting, management of many large capital projects simultaneously (average $50M total), renovation of scientific laboratories, design and construction of LEED certified projects, and experience managing major capital projects ~$100M.Should possess skills in interpreting architectural and construction drawings and contracts; developing and maintaining project budgets and schedules; negotiating confrontational issues; working with diverse constituencies; and knowledge of relevant computer tools (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and MS Outlook).Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.

Working Conditions

Hybrid office environment; this position will be based in Cambridge, MA and there is an expectation of most workdays per week on campus. Individual flexible and remote work options for this role will be discussed during the interview process.
