Applications are now being accepted for the Licensed Practical Nurse II (Flex) position at the McKinley Health Center, University of Illinois.


McKinley Health Center aims to provide high-quality ambulatory healthcare and health education to students and medical expertise to University leadership. Job Summary

Performs personal care and nursing procedures applying technical skills based on a limited knowledge of nursing principles below those requiring full professional training as a registered nurse.



Duties & Responsibilities


  • DIRECT CARE: Nursing procedures under the direct supervision of a Nurse or Physician
    1. Assist Physicians with minor surgery, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
    2. Performs and records vital signs, visual acuity, and peak flow measures. Recognizes when measured values vary from normal and report those variations to the Physician/Nurse.
    3. Observes and records objective findings such as pain, body excreta and discharge, and other changes in the condition of the body.
    4. Carries out therapeutic procedures which include tympanogram, ear wash, ice application, hot pack, enema, suture removal, dressing change, and nebulizer treatments. Sets up and administers oxygen according to physician order. Records procedure and patient's response to it.
    5. Applies splints and ace bandages. Fits patients for crutches and canes and instructs them in their use. Records procedures.
    6. Instructs patient regarding collection of urine specimen, stool specimen, and sputum specimen.
    7. Provides patient education relative to specific health issues and prescribed treatments.
    8. Provides nursing care for patients admitted to observation beds under the direction of a Registered Nurse.
    9. Upon providing evidence of successfully passing the pharmacology course, administers oral medications, rectal medications, injections by the subcutaneous, intradermal and intramuscular routes, topical medications and eye and ear drops as ordered by a Physician/Nurse Practitioner.
    10. Provides for comfort and safety of patients.
    11. Assesses patient's emotional and mental well-being. Reports patients requiring special assistance.
    12. Charts and reports nursing care activities performed and reports all observations made to Registered Nurse or Physician.
    13. Escort or place patients In provider's rooms and have them ready for examination.
    14. Transports patients from one unit to another.
    15. Participate in continuous quality Improvement activities as assigned.
  • INDIRECT PATIENT CARE
    1. Remove dirty instruments and restock with dean or sterile supplies daily.
    2. Restock with supplies necessary for day-to-day operation of the unit, i.e., chart materials, request forms. office supplies, etc.
    3. Keep exam rooms, treatment rooms and work area clean and orderly. This includes after each patient, end of the day and for situations involving Infectious diseases.
    4. Answer telephones, refer questions to providers, as appropriate, and relay messages.
    5. Make, cancel and reschedule appointments.
    6. Make outside referrals for providers.
    7. Help or complete appropriate forms/requests as instructed by the providers.
    8. Assist in the unit new employee orientation.
    9. Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the Health Center.


Additional Physical Demands

Work is performed in an office or clinic setting.
Position may be engaged in correctly lifting and/or assisting patients in and out of wheelchairs; assist patients to ambulate.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid license as a Licensed Practical Nurse issued by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.

  • Six months of nursing experience in a health care facility (such as a hospital, nursing home, medical clinic, prison, mental health facility, or closely related facilities).

  • Good verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with others as a member of a health care team.
  • Sound judgment and a sincere interest in people.


Appointment Information


This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 2736 - Licensed Practical Nurse II position, appointed on a 9-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 7/22/2024. This is a bargain position and as such the salary is driven by the collective bargaining agreement, the rate of pay for this position is $23.41/hour. Work for this position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy. This position will usually follow a work schedule of Monday to Friday (8 am to 4:30 pm) with occasional shifts on Saturdays.
