Job Description:

This position manages the chemical and biological safety programs for faculty, students, and staff involved in research at Meharry Medical College. This includes managing the collection of hazardous chemical and biological waste from Meharry research laboratories and facilities in accordance with local, State and Federal regulations.



Daily Operations



  • Conducting training programs in chemical and biological research safety for research faculty, trainees and staff.

  • Manages chemical and biological research waste collection program including collection requests, vendor schedules, and waste shipments.

  • Serves as administrator for the Institutional Biosafety Committee and Chemical Safety Committee.

  • Develops Standard Operating Procedures manual for biological and chemical waste collection and disposal for laboratories and research facilities

  • Conducts assessments and audits of work practices, facilities, and equipment for use at established biosafety containment levels.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.




Required Skills



  • Advanced communication skills and ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Detailed knowledge of chemistry basics as well as regulations for recombinant DNA experiments, safe microbiological practices, DOT, and EPA required.

  • Basic knowledge of OSHA requirements.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for effective report writing, training, and consulting.

  • Proficient with common computer programs including, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and data base.




Required Education and Experience



Master's degree in microbiology, biology, chemistry, industrial hygiene or related field from and accredited college or university and designated as a Registered Bio-safety Professional (RBP) or CNSP (Certified Biological Safety Professional) and a minimum two (2) years of experience in a research laboratory setting or equivalent degree and experience is required. At least 5 years of experience related to the development and management of bio-safety programs may be considered in lieu of the advanced education requirement and documented annual training hours from the American Biological and Safety Association (ABSA) may be considered in lieu of certification.
