Job Description:
The Department of Biology is seeking a Facilities Services Specialist/Greenhouse Manager.
The Department of Biology at the University of Iowa invites applications for a 50% term position as Greenhouse Manager beginning July 15, 2024. The initial appointment is for one year subject to annual review and renewal. This position will manage daily operation of the greenhouse (located on the 4th floor of Biology Building East), including space allocation, planting, watering, preparing growth media and soil mixes, fertilization, insect and disease control, and establishing and monitoring plant growth environments. This individual will also serve as a resource to the research staff on questions related to appropriate cultural practices for plant species they want to use in their research.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor the environmental conditions of the greenhouses, growth chamber and light room facilities and work closely with mechanical services to insure their proper operation.
- Maintain plant material for research and teaching, including watering, fertilizing, pruning, and propagation.
- Apply or release chemical and biological materials to manage insect, disease, and weed pests.
- Assist faculty, staff, and students in research projects, including constructing, installing, maintaining and repairing mechanical devices and/or equipment, and the application of chemicals or biological materials.

Education Required
- Bachelor's degree in Botany or Horticulture or related field, with completed course work in plant physiology, plant anatomy, genetics, botany and chemistry; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Qualifications
- Working knowledge of Integrated Pest Management principles and practices, plant propagation and culture methods, soil and growth media preparation.
- Working knowledge of fertilizers and pesticides, including how, why, and when to apply, relevant safety and legal requirements, and the correct use of related equipment.
- Current valid driver's license and ability to meet Fleet Safety Driving Standards.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in college/university research greenhouse.
