Broadcast Director and Studio Technician at University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma

Job Description:

The University of Oklahoma Athletics department is looking for candidates that have a passion for both collegiate athletics and live broadcast production. Working under the Director of Broadcast Content and alongside the Director of Engineering, the Broadcast Director & Studio Tech will serve as the primary director for Oklahoma’s broadcast productions while also leading the technical management of equipment within the control room. This highly skilled broadcast professional will be responsible for ensuring Oklahoma’s broadcasts are on brand under the guidelines set forth by television partners by mentoring and teaching SoonerVision’s diverse workforce. The preferred candidate will have a reference list from a variety of producers and will have a track record of working a variety of collegiate sports. 


As the lead studio tech, the ideal candidate will have an acumen for control room engineering, including but not limited to monitor walls, routing, encoding / decoding, signal testing, switchers, DANTE and spotbox. 


The preferred candidate will also have a background working with student-led production crews, showcasing patience and investment in the learning environment. Regular individual and group trainings will be expected as well as the annual development of students in the roles. Roles include but are not limited to Director, TD, Audio and Graphics.


Essential Functions



  • Broadcast Direction / Technical Direction / Production

  • Control Room Technical Operations

  • Control Room Technical Engineering

  • Train & develop student workers in all aspects of the control room

  • Direct cameras and crew in line with the Producer

  • Serve as the lead Director or Technical Director on the majority of broadcast productions, and other roles as needed

    • Nights and weekends are expected as the broadcast schedule dictates



  • Serve as the lead TD and/or studio control room engineer

  • Supervise and manage roles in the control room, serving as a resource to the students that are learning and developing broadcast skills

Required Education: Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Broadcasting, Marketing, Journalism or related field.


Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree.

  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects and deadlines

  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing

  • Ability to build rapport with students, faculty, and staff

  • Ability to produce reports and complete work within deadlines

  • Strong initiative to solve problems in a timely manner 


Advertised Physical Requirements:



  • Must be able to lift heavy objects over 79 pounds

  • Ability to engage in repetitive motion

  • Environmental - standard office environment


Certifications:



  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License or the ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire date.


Departmental Preferences:



  • Broadcast Field Engineering

    • Camera builds, cable runs, audio setup, etc



  • Control Room Engineering

    • Monitor walls, Fiber, Routing, DANTE, etc



  • Knowledge and understanding of NCAA and Conference rules

  • Experience with intercollegiate athletics

  • 50+ Events of Broadcast Productions

  • Associate degree or Junior / Senior status in a 4-year college
