SUMMARY



Bering Straits Native Corporation, a subsidiary of Bering Straits Native Corporation, is currently seeking Bear Guards for protecting HDL employees while doing geological studies at Ear Mountain.

Responsibilities




ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES



The Essential Duties and Responsibilities are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed for this position and are not intended to reflect all duties performed within the job. Other duties may be assigned.


The bear guard's primary goal is to protect the scientists/cultural resources specialists conducting field work to support the Shishmaref Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study. This role is to support the project to allow the field crews to conduct work by providing adequate safety from bears and other wildlife. The bear guard must be able to respond immediately and communicate effectively to ensure safety of all field crews.


Ability to do work that includes hiking in adverse weather conditions for long periods of time, often on irregular and steep terrain. Conditions can frequently be wet, cold, hot, windy, buggy, and/or densely vegetated.

• Work up to 12-hours a day in the conditions described above for up to seven (7)-consecutive day periods.
• Completed a bear safety class focused on bear awareness and response within the last five years. Other topics to be addressed include conflict avoidance, recognizing signs of recent wildlife activity, recognizing probably habitat areas, deterrent techniques with wildlife avoidance being the primary goal, and how to respond in the event of a wildlife encounter.
• Be aware of and understand state and federal regulations of bear watch, hazing, and takes
• Proven firearm experience including a training class on firearm safety from a nationally recognized safety organization.
• Able to comply with applicable permit stipulations
• Has appropriate footwear/clothing (including closed toe shoes), equipment, and shotgun

QUALIFICATIONS - EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND CERTIFICATION

Required (Minimum) Qualifications

• Transportation to and from the fieldwork will be by helicopter. Applicants must be able to fly in a helicopter from Shishmaref to Ear Mountain
• Work will be outside and will require extensive hiking on wet, uneven tundra or marshy areas.
• Strong attention to detail, ability to work well with others, and willingness to perform strenuous work in remote settings in adverse conditions are essential for this position.
• A strong commitment to safety and quality is required.
• Ability to work a 12-hour shift
• Own a firearm Rifle and or Shotgun

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

• Bear guard training course (likely in Shishmaref)
• Firearm Safety
• Working well with others
• Able to work a 12-hour shift for a period of 7 days

Preferred

• Able to hike, stand and watch as a guard for 12 hours in a shift at a remote location.
• Gone through the Bear Guard Training put on by a contractor through BSDC

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Individuals must be able to work a 12 hour shift to protect the employees of HDL engineering while they are doing geological studies, able to hike, stoop, and be alert for long periods of time while maintaining contact with those they are watching. Must be able to travel via helicopter to remote site.



WORK ENVIRONMENT



Work Environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be borne by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.


Job is performed in an wildlife setting with exposure to the elements for long periods of time and have the appropriate outdoor gear to be in the elements for 12 hours at a time. Must be alert and cognizant of the environment due to possible threats of wildlife encounters and to be able to deter wildlife.



SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

• No supervisory responsibilities.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFYING FACTORS



As a condition of employment, may be required to pass a pre-employment drug screening, as well as have acceptable reference and background check. Have or able to obtain firearm.
