Job Description:

Kenyon College invites applications for a tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Chemistry, to begin July 2025. Competitive candidates will have plans for an active research program rooted in experimental inorganic methods, broadly defined, and a commitment to teaching excellence. Candidates with additional experience or disciplinary connections in environmental chemistry, computational chemistry, or biochemistry are especially encouraged to apply. The Department values familiarity with best practices in inclusive teaching and the ability to mentor undergraduate research students. A Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field is required.

The position will involve teaching five courses per year, including those in our introductory chemistry and inorganic sequences. The successful candidate will also teach advanced lecture, seminar, or lab courses fitting their specialty.

Chemistry faculty are expected to develop active research programs with Kenyon students that contribute to the field. Faculty research is supported by generous startup funding, a junior leave, annual support for travel and faculty development, and the Office of Sponsored Faculty Projects. Support for summer research students is provided through the Kenyon Summer Science Scholars Program. Shared Chemistry facilities available to faculty include: NMR spectrometer (400 MHz), ATR-FTIR spectrometers, GC-MS, UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer, spectrofluorometer, electrochemical analyzer, HPLC-DAD with refrigerated autosampler, high-speed centrifuge, and cold room. An X-ray diffractometer and AFM are housed in the Physics department.

Kenyon College is ranked in the top tier of national liberal arts colleges and has a reputation for exceptional teaching and scholarship with a student body of ~1900. We are located on an idyllic campus in rural central Ohio, approximately 50 miles from Columbus, a diverse and growing metro area of ~1.7 million people. The Chemistry Department is composed of eight tenure-line faculty, growing to nine with this position, three staff supporting teaching and research, and an administrative assistant. We graduate ~20 students per year. We are housed in Tomsich Hall, which contains outstanding laboratories and instrumentation for research and teaching. Chemistry faculty, growing from eight to nine tenure lines, participate in several interdisciplinary programs including Environmental Studies, Computing, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Neuroscience.

A complete application will include 1) a cover letter; 2) a curriculum vitae; 3) a statement of teaching philosophy (no more than 1500 words or about 3 pages); 4) a statement of research and scholarship (no more than 2500 words or about 5 pages); and 5) undergraduate and graduate transcripts. A competitive application will show - in the cover letter and other documents - why you would thrive teaching at Kenyon, how your research will succeed in the context of a liberal arts college, and how you will promote a culturally and intellectually diverse and inclusive educational environment. It will cite specific examples of past accomplishments and prospective ideas, beyond stating general principles or personal commitments. (An informative teaching statement is a personal narrative about teaching and learning chemistry, which reveals how you see students as learners, explains what makes your teaching effective, and describes concrete examples of your teaching activities. An informative research statement effectively summarizes your research objectives, describes your plan to carry out that research, and addresses how undergraduate students will be involved in research activities.) Candidates are invited to include a statement in their cover letter regarding how the Covid 19 pandemic affected their career trajectory. Applicants should provide contact information of three references. All application materials must be submitted electronically through Kenyon's employment website: https://careers.kenyon.edu. Review of applications will begin on Sep 13 and continue until the position is filled. Please direct questions to Simon Garcia, Search Committee Chair (chemistrysearch@kenyon.edu).
