Position Description

Title: Heavy Equipment Operator/Laborer
Department: Heavy Equipment Program

The Heavy Equipment Operator/Laborer position is a crucial role in our conservation efforts, requiring the ability to operate heavy equipment to complete drainage and other projects as assigned by the Project Field Coordinator. Project construction may consist of ditch clean-out and maintenance, clearing, pond construction, pipe installation, mowing, and assisting other operators with projects in the capacity of a laborer.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Possess the ability to operate all district equipment proficiently and any rental or borrowed equipment when necessary, including excavators, dozers, trucks, tractors, etc.
  • To inform the supervisor of any repairs or routine maintenance that needs to be done to any equipment, such as oil changes, checking fluid levels, greasing, checking hydraulic hoses, track wear and tension, etc., and assist in minor repairs as well as visual inspection for preventative maintenance purposes.
  • Perform manual labor such as installing filter fabric, banding pipes, assisting a mechanic with repairs, and other work around the shop and yard.
  • Use hand tools such as levels, lifts, power drills, grinders, saws, pressure washers, shovels, rakes
  • Keep any district vehicle they drive clean and in good condition.
  • Be positive and courteous when dealing with the public and fellow employees. This includes being considerate of customers’ property when performing job tasks.
  • Responsible for checking grade on the projects
  • Follow all rules and regulations set by the agencies involved in any project, such as DNREC, DelDOT, and the District.
  • Ability to drive company vehicles with or without trailers.
  • Clean debris, trash, and materials from construction sites.
  • Dig trenches/ditches and assist on jobs as instructed.
  • Drive trucks carrying materials and equipment and load and unload equipment and supplies.
  • Fueling machines as needed.
  • Ensure that all work is being done in compliance with company protocols, which include safety guidelines, environmental regulations, and project-specific requirements.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk, stoop, bend, climb, lift up to 75 pounds, reach, and stretch.
  • Ability to spend all day outdoors exposed to the weather. 

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Valid Driver’s License with a good driving record
  • Three plus years of previous civil construction experience operating heavy equipment preferred.  

Supervision:

The incumbent in this position is under the direct supervision of the Project Field Coordinator & Equipment Program Manager.

Performance Review:

Your performance in each duty in this position will be evaluated against the requirements developed. The Equipment Program Manager and Project Field Coordinator will provide you with regular feedback and support, completing a formal review every year, which will be discussed with you.
