Job Description:

Clinical Assistant Professor
Expository Writing Program
New York University College of Arts and Science

New York Universitys Expository Writing Program (EWP) invites applications for full-time Clinical Assistant Professors to teach intensive first-year writing courses across the university. We will be appointing up to 5 assistant professors on a rolling basis: start dates may be as early as January 2025 but the majority of hires will likely start September 2025. The final number and start date of positions are subject to budgetary and administrative approval. Applications are due by Sept. 10th, 2024.

Openings are for renewable full-time, non-tenure track positions. Clinical Assistant Professor appointments are for three years, subject to renewal based upon a review and the recommendation of the department. Subsequent reappointment can be made for up to three years and include the possibility of promotion to Clinical Associate Professor, and, later, to Clinical Full Professor. Clinical Assistant Professors teach a 3-3 load, and all Expository Writing Program faculty are expected to participate in ongoing faculty development and program service. New faculty are required to attend a week-long intensive faculty orientation before the semester begins. NYU housing is not offered.

EWP is one of the largest writing programs in the United States, with 108 full-time faculty. Successful applicants will join a community of teachers strongly committed to pedagogical design and innovation. Our faculty have advanced degrees from a multitude of fields and think very carefully about how their disciplinary knowledge connects to and is enlarged by fundamental questions about rhetoric and writing.

Our current program needs include individuals with experience teaching multilingual and international students and/or teaching STEM-related writing.

Successful applicants will:

  • possess an advanced degree in their field of expertise (PhD, MFA, EdD).
  • have a minimum of three years of demonstrated high-level effectiveness in the college-level teaching of writing, creative writing, and/or other writing-intensive courses (preferably full-time) as the instructor of record prior to their appointment at EWP.
  • have experience in designing curriculum that emphasizes inquiry, critical reading, analysis, research, drafting and revising, and creative thinking. We welcome teachers driven by a sense of writing community and collective inquiry.
  • be strong writers who have demonstrated an active commitment to writing in their field.

We are strongly committed to a diverse faculty and program. We believe a programs excellence is tied to a breadth of perspective in its faculty, where diversity encompasses not only race, ethnicity, gender, class, and ability but also rank, age, field of study, and institutional background. We welcome applicants who are committed to creating inclusive learning environments for a range of students, including historically underrepresented students.

To apply:
Applications must include a 1-2 page cover letter, curriculum vitae, a 1-page statement of teaching philosophy, two letters of recommendation, a writing sample (of work in your field, no more than 2000 words, which can be unpublished or published), and 1-2 pages of teaching materials for a class you have taught (either a lesson plan, assignment prompt, or writing resources) that are suggestive of your pedagogical values. In your cover letter or teaching philosophy, please include a paragraph that discusses how diversity figures into your past and present teaching; research, community engagement, and/or life experiences; and how you would bring issues of diversity to bear on your contributions to the teaching and programming of NYUs Expository Writing Program.
