Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Lab Technician to join our Ashland Specialty Ingredients G.P business at our Wilmington, DE location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Corporate Research and Development function. This position will report to an Engineer.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The candidate will work with Principal Investigators and Technicians in the Process Technology group, with a focus on hands-on fine tuning of recipes or equipment to make new products developed by the research groups. The objective is to prepare the scale up at pilot or industrial scale.  The ideal candidate must be familiar with laboratory and pilot processes and be able to set up the necessary equipment.

The candidate will be responsible for the following:


  • Laboratory/Pilot equipment setup to make new product (including preparation of procedures & safety reviews)

  • Optimization of recipes to meet the scale up criteria

  • Writing reports covering results and recommendations

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Minimum two-year associate degree in chemical operations or equivalent experience  

  • Knowledge of general synthetic methods and techniques

  • Ability to work in a team and manage multiple tasks 

  • Strong communication (written, oral) and math skills

  • Ability to enter and manage data in Excel; Strong computer skills

  • Good track record of safety practices 

  • Must be able to keep a clear, well-organized lab notebook

  • Ability to work in a laboratory setting for several hours a day

  • Ability to lift up-to 50 lbs when required

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • B.S. degree in physical or life sciences (i.e. chemistry, physics, materials science, biochemistry, biology)

  • Experience working in chemical plant or chemical pilot plant
