Job Description:

LancasterHistory is currently seeking an Education and Programs Manager (Full-Time) to join the team developing and conducting educational programs for initiatives across the organization, with a special focus on programmatic initiatives at the new Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy. In the first year, the focus of the Manager's responsibilities will be collaborating with the Director of Education & Exhibition Planning and the Education and Programs Advisory Committee to develop new programs in history and civic engagement for the Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy. After the Center opens in 2025, a significant portion of the Education and Program Manager's time will shift to leading programs as well as training volunteers and staff to conduct programs, primarily at the Stevens & Smith Center.

The ideal candidate is dedicated to exploring creative strategies for education and engagement with diverse communities. They also have a passion for developing innovative programs for children, youth, and adults about the histories of slavery, civil rights, and the Constitution that will inspire a lifelong commitment to civic engagement. Extensive knowledge of these topics is not a prerequisite, but curiosity and enthusiasm for history are a must. Candidates should be community-oriented and committed to engaging diverse audiences. Candidates must have experience and passion for working with children and youth, but that experience can come in many forms that may include classroom teaching or work in youth programs, not necessarily museum education. There will be opportunities for professional development through LancasterHistory. General Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the development and execution of K-12 school-focused programs including field trips, off-site classroom visits, and teacher workshops;
  • Oversees the development and execution of non-school experiences and programs for families, youth, and adults including development of self-guided materials for permanent exhibits and family-friendly drop-in programs;
  • Builds partnerships with teachers, schools, and community groups to expand both audience and community reach;
  • Recruits, trains, and supervises education volunteers;
  • Assists with educational grants, programmatic sponsorship opportunities, and EITC program;
  • Provides occasional support for education programs in the Research Center, exhibits at LancasterHistory, and James Buchanan's Wheatland;
  • Adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics as outlined in the Collections Management Policy;
  • Supports the institutional effort to elevate diversity and inclusiveness as a core value by reaching out to underserved and underrepresented audiences; and
  • Performs other miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience:

Bachelor's degree required. Preferred 3-5 years experience in education or youth and family-related programs. High school and associate's degree holders with additional relevant experience may also qualify.

Salary and Benefits:

This is a full-time, 37.5 hours/week position which includes some weekend and evening work as program needs dictate. This position is in-person with flexibility for periodic remote work. This is an exempt position. Salary range: $42,000 - $48,000

Required Skills:

  • Experience in educational settings working with K-12-aged students and families. Experience in museum education specifically is not required. Candidates with experience in classroom education or youth and family programs are encouraged to apply;
  • Demonstrated interest in and enthusiasm for American history and civic engagement;
  • Demonstrated skill in strategic, innovative, and creative thinking as well as enthusiasm for exploring a wide range of educational strategies;
  • Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to engage effectively with diverse audiences;
  • Demonstrated administrative and project management skills and a high level of organization and attention to detail;
  • Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
  • Commitment to to embracing issues of Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Accessibility; and
  • Proficiency with technology and knowledge of platforms including Zoom and Microsoft Office 365 programs such as Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams.

Essential Functions:

  • Occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Frequent communication with the general public in crowded settings.
  • Routinely moves equipment of 20 pounds or greater. Reasonable accommodations will be made if necessary.

Note About "Required Travel:" This position can expect to need to travel to work, frequent travel between LancasterHistory and the Stevens & Smith Center (approx. 2 miles between locations), and occasional travel to other job-relevant locations primarily within Lancaster County as needed.
