The Opportunity:


The Journalist/News Fellow - Newport Miner/RANGE position is a two-year fixed term appointment serving as a civic news reporter in the Murrow News Fellowship Program. This position is for an emerging journalist to report on civic affairs in underserved communities.


As the Journalist/News Fellow, you serve as a multi-skilled reporter for the weekly Newport Miner in Pend Oreille County and RANGE, a worker-owned cooperative in Spokane, partnering to deepen coverage of local public policy, rural economics, and border issues while more deeply connecting readers in the two counties. You are based in the Newport newsroom, with occasional participation in discussions and trainings in RANGE's newsroom in Spokane. You will travel as needed, dependent on where the news is located - generally day trips, no overnights.




You gather, write, and produce civic journalism of interest to the assigned newsroom's audiences and news beats. You may turn a daily story on deadline, or produce in-depth reporting on economic, environmental, political and/or social issues facing northeastern Washington residents. Output could be in various formats, though primarily written for the newspaper or for digital platforms. The assigned newsroom will provide editing, guidance and professional support in collaboration with Murrow's Program Manager.



The work location for the Journalist/News Fellow - Newport Miner/RANGE is Newport, WA.
You may occasionally meet Range Media colleagues in Spokane, where this is a fully remote team.




Required Qualifications:




  • Positions require a Bachelor's Degree in a field relevant to area of specialization. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the degree requirement




  • Combination of relevant education and experience relevant to the beat and the role.




  • Experience with audio and/or podcasting.




  • Strong news reporting skills to produce quality journalism.




  • Ability to create engaging stories that audiences will find unique.




  • Fluent oral and written communication skills in English.




  • Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.






Preferred Qualifications:




  • Degree from any accredited higher ed institution in Washington state with a major in journalism, broadcasting, communications, or closely related field.




  • Knowledge of Washington state community issues.




  • Experience or training in new technologies for the gathering and delivery of news.




  • Experience in producing video for online or broadcast.




  • Experience using social media in a news environment.




  • Experience researching complex issues.




  • Experience with data reporting and public records.




  • Fluency in a foreign language.

Monthly Salary:

$4,583.33 | In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
