Position Summary:

The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville is seeking applicants for a Retention Specialist. The Retention Specialist within Multicultural Student Affairs serves in a student services capacity for services within the department as it relates to outreach to currently enrolled students. They serve as a retention specialist to assists undergraduate students in developing personal, social, learning and life strategies. This role is centered on supporting at-risk students and those transferring to another institution, with the aim of enhancing retention and ensuring degree completion for underrepresented minority students. 

This is a full-time position offering excellent benefits and paid leave. Salary range for this position is $43,000 - $46,000 per year, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop an individual academic coaching plan for each Multicultural Student Affairs (MSA) participant.
  • Monitor, plan, and facilitate student academic progress, MSA student programming, success plans, and career goals.
  • Work with students to develop effective study skills and habits.
  • Provide success skills workshops for all MSA program participants.
  • Document and track MSA student participation and record academic outcomes.
  • Make recommendations to improve retention efforts while advocating for campus-wide retention initiatives.
  • Serve on campus committees related to personal and program interests.
  • As a team of Advisors & Retention Specialists, responsible for all facets of pre-college camps offered through the department of Multicultural Student Affairs and works in coordination with other pre-college programming at UW-Platteville.
  • Collaborate with the management team on providing the SUCCEED Summer Bridge Program.
  • Partner with academic advisors, faculty, staff, students, and administrative personnel to track analytics, and help identify risk indicators to support data-informed retention and transfer strategies.
  • Responsible for outreach efforts at the pre-college level and represent MSA at appropriate recruitment events.
  • Implement recruitment and outreach for pre-college efforts in diverse communities with an emphasis on financial literacy and college readiness.
  • Manage assessment and data management for the pre-college populations served.
  • Maintain accurate MSA student records including contact logs, case notes, and files.
  • Provide referrals to appropriate campus resources.
  • Adhere to the established plan of operation, curriculum, process policy, program procedures, and all other related federal regulations.
  • May assist with Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion and/or provide financial aid/scholarship information.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelor Degree from an accredited institution
  • A minimum of two years’ experience working with students in an educational setting.
  • Working knowledge of advising & retention strategies.
  • Experience working with diverse students from African American, American Indian, Latino/a, Hispanic and Southeast Asian populations.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
