Job Role Summary




The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Eskenazi Health will lead, manage, direct, and be accountable for all medical staff, broadly defined, to ensure health system's goals are achieved. The CMO works to continuously improve the clinical quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of patient care. The CMO is responsible for the appropriateness of the medical care delivered by physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs) and is the liaison between Eskenazi Health leadership, the physician practice leadership (IU Health Physicians and Eskenazi Medical Group), and IU School of Medicine leadership. In addition, the CMO is accountable for modeling and upholding Eskenazi Health's mission, vision, PRIDE (Professionalism, Respect, Innovation, Development, and Excellence) values, and standards of behavior.




Essential Functions and Responsibilities




The Chief Medical Officer of Eskenazi Health will promote the integration of clinical practice, clinical education, and research while ensuring compliance with regulatory, accrediting, and credentialing/privileging standards. The CMO will also oversee, direct, and ensure that providers follow Eskenazi Health Medical Staff bylaws and all related policies and procedures. Additionally, the CMO will provide clinical oversight for Eskenazi Health services performed by physicians and APPs, in collaboration with the IUHP-EH Chief Physician Executive, ensuring that service standards are met, medical staffing needs are identified, and the stipulations of the Physician Services Agreement ("interlocal") are met. Additional functions and responsibilities are including, but not limited to:




  • Participate in recruiting IUHP-employed specialists who will work at Eskenazi Health as tier 1 (dedicated) faculty, and with other School of Medicine recruitments important to Eskenazi Health. (e.g., department chairs and vice-chairs)

  • Develop and execute plans with the service line leaders that address access, provider and staff well-being, clinical quality, patient safety, patient satisfaction, service excellence, and the provision of cost-effective clinical services.

  • Serve as the main contact for the clinical affiliation committee, work with IUHP leadership regarding specialty services provided at Eskenazi Health, review the support of medical learners working at Eskenazi Health as part of the academic affiliation agreement.

  • Review performance evaluations (e.g., OPPE) and instances of medical staff disruptive behavior in compliance with the Medical Staff Office and the Office of Patient Experience.

  • Assure a well-functioning Quality, Safety, and Infection Prevention and Control team with input from other clinical leaders, providers, and residents.

  • Attend to the value of resident input into hospital quality and safety programs as expected by the Clinical Learning Environment Review.

  • Participate in developing, implementing, and reviewing clinical protocols, policies, and procedures, with the goal that practices are evidence-based, effective, efficient, and meet internal and external standards for quality and patient safety. Oversee adherence to established guidelines and facilitate achievement of utilization management objectives.





Job Requirements




A qualified candidate will have a current licensure as an MD/DO/MBBS to practice in the State of Indiana by the State Board of Medical Board,Board Certified (or eligible), three to five years of progressive clinical executive leadership experience, eligible for a faculty appointment at Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM), and must be able to meet and maintain current Eskenazi Health credentialing and privileging requirements.
