Job Description:

POSITION TITLE: Carpenter
CLASSIFICATION: Nonexempt
DEPARTMENT: Public Works
SUPERVISOR: Trades Manager
GRADE: NE9

Position Summary:
Under general supervision of the Trades Manager performs new construction, build, erect install and repair forms, structures and other fixtures made from wood and other materials as needed to assist with installation, preventive maintenance and repairs of Pueblo of Santa Ana buildings, facilities and residential homes.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Under general supervision, measure, mark and arrange materials to established layout based on blueprints or instructions.
Cut and shape structures, forms or other fixtures from wood, plastic, fiberglass or drywall.
Use various hand and power tools to securely build or repair assigned projects.
Join materials with the most appropriate nail, screw, staple or adhesive.
Ensure the accuracy of work by checking completed projects with tools such as levels, surveying equipment or framing squares, correcting problems as needed.
Create wooden forms for pouring concrete.
Erect and dismantle scaffolding.
Install windows and doors.
Adhere to local building and safety codes and guidelines.
Promote workplace safety.
Ensure all work areas are clean and organized. Responsible for maintenance of tools and materials and writing and implementing a preventative maintenance program.
Interpret blueprints, works from sketches or verbal instructions.
Maintain logs and records of work performed and materials and equipment used.
Provide excellent customer service.
Maintain strict confidentiality.
Assist other maintenance personnel or vendors as directed.
Contribute to a team effort.
Must be able to read and follow directions about assigned projects.
Adhere to Santa Ana Pueblos Policies and Procedures.
Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED. Must have 5 years trade experience or a combination of experience and successful completion of vocational school or technical college with an emphasis in construction. Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation including a motor vehicle check. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico drivers license and be insurable under the Pueblos insurance.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications:
Knowledge of carpentry principles and methods.
Knowledge of general safety rules, requirements and procedures.
Ability to solve mathematical problems quickly and accurately.

Ability to work with hand and power tools applicable to the trade.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and understand directions.
Ability to establish and implement a preventive maintenance program.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee occasionally is required to sit. Considerable physical activity; heavy physical work; heavy moving, lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects up to 50 pounds is a primary part of the job. Use two-person lift when lifting more than 50 pounds.

Work Environment:
Work is generally performed in an indoor and outdoor setting where exposure to unpleasant odors, dust, dirt, fumes, and chemicals may occur. Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which may require wearing safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, or protective face shields.
