GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

As the Research Assistant, you will provide administrative support for the upcoming re-installation of the Mary and Michael Jaharis Gallery of Byzantine Art. You will assist in the research and administrative aspects of the installation and support the development of future Byzantine Crypt exhibitions. You will support the curatorial, conservation, administrative, and exhibitions teams throughout the planning, development, and execution of the installation.

This is a position with an established end-date or time frame. Time frames will begin upon hire: 1 year.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Support permanent collection research tasks, including those related to upcoming gallery reinstallations, provenance research, and potential acquisitions
  • Assist in supervising interns and visiting researchers working with the Byzantine collection
  • Research relevant works of Byzantine art and their histories of ownership
  • Support TMS data entry for Byzantine objects and exhibition records
  • Contribute to research preparation and checklist development for Byzantine Crypt exhibitions
  • Collaborate with internal and external curators, collection managers, and scholars on research and documentation of Byzantine collection
  • Support cross-departmental work in the implementation of community outreach and programming.
  • Other related duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA and Graduate-level work in Byzantine, Ancient, and/or Medieval studies required
  • Understanding of Byzantine Art, eastern Mediterranean art, and archaeology preferred
  • Demonstrated research experience on eastern Mediterranean art and archaeology or related field required
  • Understanding of Eastern Mediterranean geography preferred.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and experience coordinating complex projects
  • Computer literacy with TMS or other collection management system, exhibition database development, image scanning
  • Work with previous Museum exhibitions preferred
  • Work with previous exhibition websites preferred

COMPENSATION RANGE:

  • Pay Range: $31.00 - $33.00 / Hourly
  • The advertised pay scale reflects the good faith minimum and maximum salary range for this role. The advertised pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage for any specific employee. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, education, special licensing or qualifications, and other factors.

Location Requirements

At time of employment, employees are expected to be located within commuting distance of the Museum. "Commuting distance" means that they are located in one of following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania (the "Tri-state and PA" areas), and be able to commute to and from the Museum in a single day.
