Type: Full-Time

Reports to: Chief Growth Officer

Office Location: 1801 W. Warner, Suite 202, Chicago IL; required in-office minimum of 3 days per week (hybrid work policy subject to change) Office location moving to 224 W. Hill St. Chicago, IL in Fall 2024

Who We Are Looking For:

NAMI Chicago is seeking an experienced and dynamic Director of Development to lead our fundraising efforts. The Director of Development will be responsible for the strategic direction, planning, and execution of all fundraising activities, including individual fundraising, fundraising events, donor cultivation (including major gifts and planned giving), and grants management. This role also includes budget management and staff supervision to ensure the effective achievement of our financial goals and mission.


Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

Fundraising Strategy and Execution:

Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to meet annual and long-term financial goals.
Lead and manage all aspects of individual fundraising, including annual giving, major gifts, and planned giving.
Oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of fundraising events.
Identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors to build a robust donor pipeline.

Donor Cultivation and Stewardship:

Cultivate relationships with current and prospective donors, ensuring regular and meaningful engagement.
Develop and implement strategies for donor recognition and stewardship.
Oversee the creation of donor communications, including appeals, newsletters, and impact reports.

Major Gifts and Planned Giving:

Develop and execute a major gifts program, including identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects.
Manage a portfolio of major gift donors and prospects.
Develop and promote planned giving opportunities to donors.

Grants Management:

Identify and research grant opportunities from foundations, corporations, and government agencies.
Oversee the preparation and submission of grant proposals, ensuring compliance with all grant requirements and deadlines.
Manage grant reporting and stewardship activities.

Budget Management:

Develop and manage the development department budget, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and financial sustainability.
Monitor and report on fundraising progress, including forecasting and variance analysis.

Staff Management:

Supervise and mentor development staff, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
Foster a collaborative and results-oriented team environment.
Conduct regular performance evaluations and set individual and team goals.


Knowledge:

In-depth understanding of fundraising principles, strategies, and best practices.
Comprehensive knowledge of donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship processes.
Familiarity with major gifts, planned giving, and grant writing techniques.
Awareness of the nonprofit sector, including current trends and challenges.
Knowledge of financial management principles and budgeting processes.

Skills:

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate the mission and vision of NAMI Chicago compellingly.
Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
Proficiency in using fundraising software and donor management systems (e.g., Raiser's Edge, DonorPerfect).
Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, and staff.
Strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret data and make informed decisions.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and other relevant software tools.

Abilities:

Ability to develop and execute comprehensive fundraising plans that align with organizational goals.
Ability to identify, cultivate, and solicit major gift prospects effectively.
Capacity to manage and mentor a team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.

Capacity to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative and leadership.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with integrity.

Qualifications & Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in Nonprofit Management, Business, Communications, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 6 years of progressive experience in nonprofit fundraising, with a proven track record of achieving revenue targets.
Computer Skills: Proficiency Microsoft Access, Excel, and Word. Proficiency in Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange; Windows operating systems; Bloomerang donor management and other software routinely used by NAMI Chicago
