Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Journeyperson – General Mechanic to join our Ashland LLC, Specialty Ingredients G.P. business at our Hopewell, Virginia location. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the Maintenance function. This position will report to the Maintenance Manager.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Performing a variety of mechanical work requiring skill and ability in connection with repair, modification, installation and maintenance of chemical process equipment, general preventive maintenance, repair overall and construction, including but not limited to machining, welding, mechanical troubleshooting, hydraulic systems, pipefitting, drawing, lubrication, pumps, fans, compressors, boilers, sheet metal, structural steel, reactors and rigging

  • Carries out duties in compliance with all state and federal regulations and guidelines including FDA, EPA and OSHA

  • Maintain a clean, safe and unobstructed work area

  • General maintenance responsibilities, assignments on a daily basis may include repair to pumps, valves, centrifuges, reactors, conveying systems, screening systems, fans, compressors and any other production equipment required in the facilities production area

  • General maintenance work requiring welding, pipefitting, lubrication, sheet metal work, rigging, machining

  • Flexibility to work overtime as required

  • Efficiently perform tasks while always keeping safety and quality first

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Minimum of 4 years' experience in manufacturing/industrial

  • Certified Journeyperson Mechanic

  • Must have working knowledge in the maintenance of machinery & mechanical equipment such as pumps, gearboxes, pneumatic tools, conveyor systems, piping systems, & production equipment.

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • Welding experience

  • Possess the ability & initiative to perform safely, efficiently, & accurately to specific duties related to the operation of a chemical process

  • Certificate of completion from industrial maintenance trade school

  • Certification/proven skills in any of the following:  machining, mechanical troubleshooting, hydraulic systems, reading blueprints, compressors & boilers, sheet metal, structure steel, reactors and rigging

  • Proficiency in Windows based computer skills

  • Previous experience with OSHA required lockout tag out, confined space, HAZMAT, PPE requirements

  • Prior experience with explosion prevention systems (e.g. FIKE)

  • Chemical manufacturing in food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic fields

  • Experience entering data into computer system (e.g. SAP, MAXIMO)

  • Previous experience in an environment utilizing GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), ISO Certification
