Job Description
Research and Innovation (R&I) has an exciting opportunity for an intern to join our dynamic research and innovation team in Carlisle, PA. We are looking for an excited, reliable, and goals-oriented intern to join our R&I team starting this fall. This position is for an intern to work in our world class analytical laboratory under the guidance of an experience Senior Analytical Scientist. This role is responsible for engaging in projects based on analyzing polymer compounds which contain fillers, plasticizers, lubricants, flame retardants, etc. The intern will be responsible for conducting various analytical techniques under the guidance of a senior scientist to advance method development projects or analytical lab capabilities.
Job Responsibilities
* Apply general and organic chemistry class and lab experience to assist in developing new methods for analyzing roofing materials and other polymer systems
* Research and evaluate effectiveness of analytical methods and provide insights into alternative methods by reviewing technical literature
* Maintain clear and effective communication with senior scientist mentor and actively collaborate with other analytical lab scientists and research assistants
* Collaborate on various analytical method development projects to support product line teams using spectroscopy (SEM/optical/FT-IR) and/or chromatography (GC, GC/MS, or HPLC) techniques
* Execute required routine chromatography and/or spectroscopy analysis as needed
* Maintain a productive laboratory workspace and follow safe laboratory practices and procedures
Job Qualifications
* Rising Junior or Senior in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Polymer Science, or related disciple (must have completed General Chemistry I/II and Organic Chemistry I/II with Lab)
* Fundamental or working knowledge of typical analytical instruments (e.g. GC, GC/MS, HPLC, SEM, FTIR)
* Previous research experience and/or internships is a plus
* Strong organization and planning skills including managing work and prioritizing projects
* Strong verbal and written communication skills
* Competent computer skills including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and Outlook
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively with cross-functional teams
