Job Description:

Join Facilities Management at the University of Oklahoma and be part of a team dedicated to meeting the University's ever-changing needs. Located within Facilities Management, the Environmental Systems shop is responsible for the repair, service, and installation of heating and air conditioning systems, sheet metal, building automation controls, refrigeration equipment, and water fountains. The Environmental Systems Manager will be responsible for the management of the daily operation of the Facilities Management Environmental Systems program which includes developing, planning, and directing programs and policies within Environmental Systems.


Duties:



  • Oversees the daily operation of the University’s Environmental Systems program including installation, maintenance, and modifications for HVAC systems, including: building related air handling, refrigeration, chilled-water, steam, and hot-water applications.

  • Determines and develops labor and supply requirements for Environmental Systems division of Facilities Management.

  • Prepares estimate of time, labor, and materials to be used on environmental systems pro­jects. Prepares contractual specifications for construc­tion, renovation, or overhaul work to be done by outside contractors.

  • Prepares a variety of special and recurring reports and analyses reflecting daily operations and project status.

  • Develops and maintains a training program for environmental systems team members to instruct them in the safe and proper use of tools and equipment.

  • Develops schedules and assignments for work crews based on job priorities and coordinates with other trades/shops as necessary

  • Reads and interprets complex drawings and specifications and provides instructions and guidance to assigned personnel

  • Inspects completed job assignments for adherence to trade standards and contract specifications

  • Communicates with other departments and university customers as required for coordination, information exchange, project planning, etc. including customer follow-up to ensure excellence in customer service.

  • Performance management of team members including: interviewing, hiring, training, and performance evaluations.

  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

Required Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree, AND:



  •  24 months of experience with electrical, refrigeration, air conditioning, refrigeration pneumatics, or equivalent type using HVAC systems. Full-time vo-tech training in HVAC/ refrigeration may be substituted for two years' experience.


Equivalency/Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelor's degree for a total of 72 months of experience.


Skills:



  • Ability to speak, read, and write clear, concise English

  • Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions

  • Advanced math skills

  • Read and understand complex written materials such as blueprints, metrics or technical manuals

  • Detail oriented for accuracy of data and information

  • Able to complete work within deadlines

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare the sections budget, maintain records, and prepare reports

  • Use hand tools and diagnostic equipment

  • Manage recordkeeping activities, making changes to existing paper and computer documents

  • Knowledge of installation and maintenance of HVAC systems, including pneumatic and digital

  • Progressive knowledge of commercial building equipment, industrial HVAC equipment, utilities installation, maintenance of DDC and pneumatic controls. Proven growth in HVAC and related utilities construction and installation means and methods. 

  • Must be able to perform basic data analysis

  • Able to effectively evaluate projects/programs and produce comprehensive reports

  • Must be able to supervise staff and communicate directions and expectations effectively

  • Must have strong ability to lead project teams

  • Must be able to create and deliver effective training presentation


Certifications:



  • Valid Driver's License

  • Unlimited Mechanical Contractor's License, to be filed on behalf of University of Oklahoma. 

  • Certification for use of refrigerant recovery/recycle equipment or ability to obtain the certificate within 12 months of employment.

  • Boiler Operators License or ability to obtain within 12 months of employment.


Working Conditions:



  • Physical: Climbing ladders and stairs. Digging with shovels, sharpshooters, and/or posthole diggers. Frequent and repeated bending, stooping, and kneeling. Crawling under structures and through tunnels. Working with arms extended above head. Lying down and working beneath ground level. Lifting and carrying loads and tools up to 100 pounds up or down ladders and stairs. Operating heavy equipment, jack hammers and concrete saws. Excessive stress on back, arms, and shoulders.

  • Environmental: Working in muddy ditches, excavations, and in extreme weather conditions. Some overtime required, including nights, weekends and holidays. May be designated as an essential position during emergency closures. May be required to remain on campus overnight during weather or other emergencies.


Supervision:



  • Air Conditioning Shop and Building Automation Systems Shop, up to 30 direct reports


Department Preferences:



  • 12 months in a lead or supervisory capacity
