Position Title: Driver’s Education Instructor

Classification: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Academic Manager

SCA CODE: 15090-Technical Instructor

Position Description

Summary

Responsible for providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pass the written and driving portions of the state operator’s license examination.

Essential Functions

  • 1. Provides classroom and behind-the-wheel/on road instruction that meets state-mandated requirements. To include the use of the Center provided Driving Simulator.
  • 2. Assists students with prior offenses in re-establishing their eligibility and securing a license prior to completion.
  • 3. Ensures that all student test results, and progress are documented and recorded using the automated Center Information System (CIS).
  • 4. Maintains up-to-date skills in field of specialty through available sources such as publications, formal study programs, and in-service training.
  • 5. Must be able to provide evening driving hours to students per NYS requirement.
  • 6. Ensure that students complete the mandatory 5-hour course.
  • 7. Assists students with obtaining their driving permits through the DMV.
  • 8. Develops a good relationship with community partners (i.e. DMV)
  • 9. Ensure that students complete and pass a driving checklist prior to being eligible to take their road test.
  • 10. Models, mentors, and monitors the positive normative culture of the center.
  • 11. Acts as a responsible custodian for assigned center property.
  • 12. Reports violations of unethical behavior.
  • 13. Suggests opportunities for continuous operational improvement and reduction of waste.
  • 14. Identifies health and safety concerns related to the position.
  • 15. Ensures drivers/staff are educated and updated on all transportation/driver-relevant information.
  • 16. Able to maintain a 75% or higher on employee scorecard.
  • 17. Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Required Education & Experience

  • Appropriate certifications and licenses in state of employment or equivalent
  • Professional licenses and accreditation by professional trade organization (required) Certifications/Competencies
  • Driver & Traffic Safety Education (DTSE) credential.

Certification and Competencies

  • Ability to complete all mandated training requirements per government and management directives
  • Ability to deal with a variety of staff and students in a professional manner in diverse situations.
  • Timely completion and accuracy of all departmental work.
  • Ability to promote the Career Success Standards (CSS) by modeling appropriate behaviors, mentoring students when necessary, and monitoring both positive and negative behaviors through interventions
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer proficiency

Minimum Eligibility Qualifications

• A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is required

• I-9 documentation required to verify authorization to work in the United States

• Ability to pass pre-employment drug test and background check
