Job Description:

TransCore (TRN), a subsidiary of ST Engineering, is seeking a full-time Senior SQL Database Administrator to join our team in Houston, Texas.

Job Summary: The Sr. SQL Database Administrator is responsible for the design, implementation, and management of our databases and the development of our applications. This includes working closely with system managers and developers to add system functionality, tables, and data; optimizing systems for availability and performance; and contributing to system upgrades. The ideal candidate will have excellent problem-solving skills and experience in managing complex database systems, as well as a strong background in software development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Design, develop, and manage the company's database systems.
  • Develop and optimize complex SQL queries and stored procedures.
  • Collaborate with developers to improve applications and establish best practices for database interactions.
  • Analyze system requirements and identify potential database design and performance improvements.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior developers and DBAs.
  • 24x7 Production Database on call support.
  • Maintain documentation of designs, coding standards, and operational procedures.
  • Generates regular reports (as needed), configurations and standard operating procedures for business requirements.

Education: Bachelor's degree in computer science from an accredited college or university.

Required Skills & Experience:


  • 6-8 years of experience in database administration for very large and complex databases in SQL Server 2022, 2019, 2016, 2008 and SQL Server 2008 R2.
  • Administering T-SQL Server High Availability and Disaster Recovery strategies.
  • Expertise in T-SQL Server writing stored procedures, triggers, cursor and functions.
  • Experience implementing the new SQL Server 2019/2016 mechanisms like data compression, online indexing, contained databases.
  • Proficiency and expertise in SQL Server replication, backup/recovery, disaster recovery and planning.

  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in Performance Tuning, Query Optimization, using Performance Monitor, SQL Profiler and other related monitoring and troubleshooting tools.

  • Experience with cloud services like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure.
  • Proficient in MS SSRS.
  • Familiarity with data modeling tools and database design.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies.

  • Experience working in Data Management projects. Ability to apply mastery knowledge in one of the relational databases (DB2, MSSQL, Teradata)
  • Experience working with data manipulation, preparation, cleansing.
  • Experience working with ETL Tools (Informatica/DS/SSIS) for data Integration.
  • Experience designing and developing automated analytic software, techniques, and algorithms.
  • Experience in Batch processes, Import, Export, Backup, Database Monitoring tools and Application support.
  • Working knowledge in Analysis Services (SSAS), and Clustering.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and adapt to a constantly changing environment
  • Experience with data visualization tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau).
  • Strong commitment to effective communication laterally to support teams and vertically to senior management.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
