DIRECTOR / NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION
Position Number: S-3443
Position Summary:
Provides leadership in the planning, preparation, and execution of all programs designed to assist students and their families in the transition and orientation to Central Michigan University. Coordinates the direction, promotion, assessment, and internal and external communication for new student transition and orientation events in coordination with the divisions of Recruitment and Retention, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs. Develops and implements campus programming to address the needs of different populations of students. Evaluates the impact of programming on the success, persistence and retention rates of new students. Creates cross-campus partnerships with key service areas identified as important initial contacts for new students (and their supporters) to provide a seamless transition to CMU .
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree.
Two years of relevant and progressive orientation, advising or student affairs related experience with college bound students.
Demonstrated ability to lead a team, work collaboratively with other areas and successfully lead projects through completion.
Supervisory experience and demonstrated ability to manage and lead groups and individuals.
Demonstrated experience in presentation and public speaking, as well as excellent oral and written communication skills.
Organizational, planning, prioritization of tasks, communication, customer service, and critical thinking skills.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations.
Experience in event management, developing program goals, evaluating outcomes and budgeting/monitoring expenditures.
Strong technology skills including experience with MS Office tools.
Periodic schedule flexibility during peak new student periods for evenings and weekends as needed.
Ability to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree in student affairs, higher education, or related field.
Experience with on-line instructional design and program facilitation.
Experience with alternative program delivery methods.
Event management experience.
Experience with CRM solutions.
Experience with social media campaigns/platforms.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Effectively plans, leads and supervises new student orientation and transition programming including budget, in-person events, and workshops in collaboration with academic and student services departments.
Provides campus leadership to all planning groups and departments in support of new student orientation and supervises two full-time staff, up to 40 student mentors, 24 staff orientation advisors and volunteers, and facilitates event/daily coverage of over 200 campus partners.
Directs, supervises and trains campus orientation staff and student mentors/leaders; recruits, hires, and evaluates all personnel assigned to new student programs.
Develops event management plan including budget, target audience, facilities, and campus resource needs that supports overall enrollment and university goals.
Prepares and disseminates orientation evaluation and assessment information to appropriate areas of the college.
Develops, implements, and evaluates new technology, procedures and systems to support student engagement in orientation and the first year transition.
Coordinates and develops new student transition/orientation information, communications and other publications for distribution to students and their supporters in coordination with enrollment needs and goals.
Conducts evaluations to assess the effectiveness of new student programming and services.
Participates in campus teams such as first year experience to ensure new student transition/orientation programming is consistent with institutional goals.
Coordinates with university departments to secure representatives to participate in new student transition/orientation programming.
Creates event templates and calendaring with campus resources to schedule, publicize, and promote new student programming.
Conducts orientation sessions and performs duties as needed during the day, evening, and/or Saturday hours at main campus and distance locations.
Develops goals, plans, and procedures to improve effectiveness and efficiency of all operations.
