Function of Position:

The Associate Vice President, Development is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive development plan for the Foundation which results in private support for College and Foundation priorities. The successful candidate will work directly with leadership prospects to secure major and transformational gifts, oversee special events, annual giving and alumni activities; and, working with the support of the MCC Foundation Board of Directors, create and execute strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors and prospects. Reporting to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director of the Foundation, the Associate Vice President, Development serves as a member of the senior management staff and will join a dynamic team that works to enhance private philanthropic support for MCC.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Functions:

  • Plan, executive and manage all fundraising and development programs.
  • Oversee and support the success of special events
  • Report and track results of annual, major and special campaigns.
  • Develop special fundraising projects to support key college programs.
  • Write, review and approve fundraising proposals.
  • Develop and coordinate an effective program for donor recognition and stewardship.
  • Serve as staff liaison to assigned board committees, support and manage committee meetings, provide direction for staff and volunteers, and generate regular updates and progress reports.
  • Participate as a full member of the Foundation's advancement team including professional development activities and staff meetings.
  • Provide leadership as head of the Development department and as a member of the senior management team; provide supervision to all professional and support staff within the department.

Secondary Functions:

  • Plan and develop annual fundraising goals and objectives; prepare and manage annual budgets for assigned projects.
  • Prepare and analyze reports of activities and programs.
  • Work with senior management team to develop and recommend development policies, procedures and standards to enhance operations within the Foundation.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned master's degree in a relevant discipline from a regionally accredited higher education institution, or a bachelor's degree with 10 or more years of demonstrated equivalent work experience in a related field.
  • Must be able to determine how best to develop and maintain effective relationships with donors and determine when and how a prospective donor can be successfully solicited for gifts.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to create efficient systems.
  • Experience in budget and volunteer management and/or customer service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior computer skills, including high proficiency in: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook; expected to learn and use the database and reporting software program for development (Banner).
  • Detail-oriented, energetic self-starter with a positive and enthusiastic outlook.
  • Vision to plan ahead, take initiative and set and adhere to deadlines.
  • Ability to multi-task and to work collaboratively with others in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with a diverse audience of alumni and donors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Development experience with increasing responsibilities in an academic setting or with a public entity.
  • Experience with current fundraising products and tools.
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish, or other languages, proficiently


Additional Information:

Salary: Salary is determined based on experience, internal equity and college budget. This position has a range of $110,000 to $130,000 and is based on these mentioned factors.

Supervised By: Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Executive Director, MCC Foundation

Provides Supervision For: Director of Development, Assistant Directors of Development, Development Assistants

Working Environment:

  • The MCC Foundation is located on the Downtown Campus of Monroe Community College located in Rochester, New York.
  • This position is highly mobile within the Rochester region and requires reliable personal transportation.
  • This position functions primarily during normal business hours, with occasional evening and weekend activities.
  • Travel outside the immediate Rochester area is typically confined to attendance at professional conferences and meetings 1-2/year.
  • In addition, travel outside the immediate Rochester area for prospect visits should be expected.

MCC offers a Flexible Work Policy for benefit eligible employees. Types of flexible work arrangements include flextime/staggered shifts, remote work/telecommuting and compressed work schedule. The availability of flexible work arrangements varies by division, department, and position, based upon business and operational needs. Limitations to flexible work arrangements are outlined in the official policy.
