Job Description

Full Stack Engineer - REMOTE

Why you want to work at Flexion:

We're looking for a Full Stack Engineer with an unwavering passion for developing meaningful, easy-to-use applications. This position will support a federal government agency focused on incrementally funding new product development across the federal landscape, starting at the prototype level and scaling from there as the work we're doing is validated and proven. This is a remote position.

At Flexion (an agile software company that's been delivering excellence for over 24 years), our company culture is built on autonomy, trust, and transparency. We empower teams to remain self-sufficient and self-directed by hiring people who can solve complex problems through collaboration-this means lending a hand and flexing your multi-skilled muscles (research, content, business analysis, information architecture, etc.) as needed. Every member within a cross-functional team is a leader who takes responsibility for the entire team's success, which mirrors the company's overall approach of low hierarchy.

What the job looks like:

We are looking for engineers with an entrepreneurial, early-product mindset, who have experience shaping and scoping fuzzy ideas into impactful solutions. This person should be comfortable zooming into implementation details and zooming out to the broader landscape of tech policy, privacy, and security needs, situating them in our context.

You'll use your start-up mentality to help determine the viability, impact, and value of many different kinds of digital product and service ideas within the federal government. This involves deep user and internet research, coupled with the ability to ask the right questions at the right time. As the ideas take shape, you'll also build out prototypes and MVPs that illustrate the need and possible solutions to decision makers. Based on the results of this R&D work, you'll advocate for the very best ideas to receive additional support and resources - knowing that most won't make the cut. You and the team would be tackling several of these problem statements at a time, arriving at answers within weeks, not months.

You should be as comfortable building prototype code as production code, and know the difference as well as when to employ each. In a fast-moving project, you will need to balance the need to go deep versus going wide, directing efforts where they are most effective. You'll collaborate with teammates to architect, design, and implement software solutions to satisfy business requirements. Your ability to work with all aspects of software development including DevOps, quality assurance, research, and design will be key. Because our teams are often working on several projects at once, you'll need to coordinate with teammates on interdependent work streams, and you may be asked to shift gears to jump on a critical issue along with other teams and resolve quickly.

Why we want to hire you:

You are passionate about software development and you can develop small pieces as you go, while still thinking about how they fit into the whole. You welcome change as a positive thing (instead of viewing it as "rework") and never look at anything you deliver as "final." You understand when "good enough" really IS good enough, without ever compromising on the overall product quality.

You have:

  • 5+ years of full stack software engineering experience
  • 5+ years experience with JavaScript, HTML and CSS. Experience with Python, TypeScript and/or Ruby highly desired
  • Experience working with JavaScript frameworks (Vue, React, Node), Typescript and Cloud providers is preferred
  • Experience leveraging a design system to build sites and apps. Experience with US Web Design System a plus
  • Demonstrated success in building applications while working in an Agile environment
  • Experience with automated unit testing and end-to-end testing
  • Knowledge and experience with API development.
  • Experience solving complex problems and implementing solutions for performance and scalability.
  • Built modern CI/CD pipelines, including experience or interest in developing custom GitHub Actions
  • Strong communication skills and internal motivation to solve problems
  • Passion for learning new technologies and the ability to do so quickly
  • Ability to write high-quality code efficiently
  • General familiarity with SSPs and/or security compliance (specifically FedRAMP or FISMA) a plus

Ideologies or development styles you are comfortable with:
  • Agile Development
  • Test Driven Development
  • Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment

At Flexion, we live by these principles:

  • Speak openly and honestly with your colleagues and clients about problems and proposed solutions
  • Welcome and handle changing requirements and priorities with little or no warning
  • Collaborate online in small groups about 50% of the time
  • Encourage simple and minimal solutions that keep options open
  • Expect and vocally advocate for quality first
  • Learn new practices and techniques as the situation demands
  • Ensure the teams develop demonstrable software every week or two
  • Do what needs to be done to deliver the product or project without ego or attitude
  • Dig deep to find the root causes of problems so we can create the right solutions
  • Relentlessly improve yourself, your team, and your processes
