Job Description:

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is seeking a Senior Unix/Linux Systems Administrator.


The College of Liberal Arts is seeking an experienced Senior Unix/Linux Systems Administrator. This position will provide systems support for instruction and research centric systems including high performance computing clusters in a mixed Linux and Windows environment. This position will work in conjunction with the CLAS (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences) Information Technology group while striving to implement and architect specific research and instructional needs in the college. Interaction with faculty, staff and central IT resources will require excellent interpersonal skills. This interaction will require understanding and cooperation with other campus technology staff to identify and implement the best shared, independent or centrally hosted solutions.



Hybrid within Iowa: This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work within Iowa. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilizes system requirements to design complex IT configurations.
  • Implements best practices to provide base-level system security and adhere to university guidelines for system security and backups.
  • Collects and analyzes service data/metrics. Use this data to help make decisions about future projects.
  • Utilizes inter-institutional systems administration relationships to solve complex issues
  • Works in close collaboration with the CLAS IT group as well as other central IT group and decentralized/affiliate IT groups to deliver optimal systems and services
  • Develops presentations to campus IT communities.
  • Mentors staff and provides leadership in a specific area of expertise.

Education Required:
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, MIS, or related degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Required Qualifications:

  • Eligibility to work on ITAR, EAR, and NIST-compliant projects.
  • 5-7 years of Linux systems administration and/or IT application administration experience.
  • Experience with configuration management software Puppet, Ansible or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal, customer service and teamwork skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with technical and non-technical staff.
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide-range of constituencies in a varied technical environment.



Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate technology proposals and analyze system specifications from technical, financial, and integration perspectives.
  • Experience with the following software: CentOS/Rocky, Ubuntu, VMWare/Virtualization software.
  • Experience installing/supporting open source databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) & open source applications.
  • Experience with security systems relevant to computer systems and networks, notably Active Directory authentication, use of certificates, and implementation / administration of Group Policy, LDAP.
  • Experience with and knowledge of organizational structures, workflows, and operating procedures in a technology environment.
  • Project management experience.
  • Experience supporting technology in a higher education setting.
