Job Description Summary

Provides both legal and related business support to the Credit Union for areas of responsibility assigned to the Operations team of the Legal Department. Ensures the Credit Union has appropriate measures in place to comply with applicable laws and to prevent, identify, and react to risks related to business, consumer and member facing products, processes and services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Provides accurate and effective advice and assistance to Credit Union staff related to areas of responsibility, including but not limited to: Consumer and business share accounts and loan products; Deceased account functions; Fiduciary relationships and accounts; Privacy; Business continuity and disaster recovery; Member-facing contracts, terms and conditions, and other legal documents; Member-facing processes, products, and services (e.g., safe deposit boxes, Notaries Public, checks, savings bonds, ACH, wires, payment systems, etc.).

  • Conducts in-depth research and ensures legal related information from a wide variety of sources is effectively aggregated, analyzed, and communicated to management to provide valuable insight and facilitate strategic decision-making.

  • Communicates complex concepts to all levels of staff across the Credit Union in a manner that is accurate, easily understood, and concise.

  • Develops, implements, and leads the day-to-day operation of second line of defense programs, processes, policies, procedures, and controls for assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Drafts and reviews both internal and member-facing forms and other documentation to ensure compliance with appropriate guidelines

  • Develops and maintains an in-depth knowledge and understanding of applicable laws, best practices, and Credit Union processes.

  • Stays abreast of regulatory, legal, and related issues, advising the Credit Union on potential or actual risks and changes, and recommending and implementing actions in response.

  • Reviews and assesses the sufficiency of Credit Union processes, policies, procedures, and controls; and recommends and facilitates implementation of changes to address identified deficiencies.

  • Works with other departments within the Credit Union to ensure all processes, policies, procedures and controls are appropriately followed and enforced, and that legal operations risks are properly mitigated and addressed including identifying the need for, assigning, and monitoring completion of any necessary corrective actions

  • Ensures Credit Union staff are appropriately trained regarding relevant legal issues and the implications of non-compliance by developing, conducting, reviewing, and updating trainings.

  • Creates, reviews, and updates reference materials and other internal documentation

  • Coordinates and collaborates cross functionally across all levels of the Credit Union and with third parties; creates, leads and represents Legal as part of cross-functional teams.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Minimum Qualifications

To perform this job satisfactorily, an employee must be able to carry out each essential duty competently. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, experience, skills and abilities required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Education Requirements


  • Juris Doctor degree from an ABA accredited law school or MBA - Required

  • License to practice law in Alabama - Preferred

Experience Requirement


  • 3 Years - Experience working as part of the second line of defense at a financial institution or experience working in a law firm, in-house legal department or other similar environment - Required

  • Management or project management experience - Preferred

  • Experience drafting complex, consumer-facing legal or other documentation - Preferred

  • Experience providing legal advice to a financial institution or other complex, regulated organization - Preferred

  • Experience with probate, estate planning, corporate law, or real estate law - Preferred

  • Possesses a strong familiarity with financial regulations, including data protection, information security, and other applicable regulations.

  • Provide guidance in the resolution of complex problems utilizing advanced knowledge and experience within areas of responsibility.

  • Lead and model RISE values and Code of Ethics through daily interactions and conduct.

  • Promote and foster excellent member service and teamwork throughout division.

  • Ability to communicate in a professional manner and deliver information clearly and effectively to staff. Actively listen to questions, opinions and ideas of others. Use tact and diplomacy in sensitive and confidential situations.

  • Use correct English including spelling, grammar and punctuation.

  • Operate computers and use business software and other standard office equipment.

  • Understand and follow written and oral instructions.

  • Set example through punctuality and managing one’s own time effectively.
