Responsibilities



Position Summary: Plays a pivotal role in designing, developing, and implementing packaging solutions for Snap-on products. Designs and develops product packaging to ensure packaging meets industry standards, minimizes environmental impact, and effectively protects our products during transit and storage. Selects, tests and analyzes materials for packaging based on durability and cost effectiveness. Identifies opportunities for improvement and efficiency and develops new concepts with emphasis on packaging manufacturability, customer satisfaction, and project timeframes. Project plans, schedules, progress, expenditures, and priorities are regularly reviewed to ensure goals are being met. Primary interface with purchasing, product management, distribution, marketing, sales, quality assurance and manufacturing. Assists Purchasing in making packaging sourcing decisions.



Key Tasks:



  • Design innovative and cost-effective packaging solutions that meet product requirements, safety standards, and regulatory compliance.

  • Develop sketches, specifications, samples, and written analyses of proposed packaging for review and design approval.

  • Utilize Catia, Solidworks, or other design tools to create prototypes and mock-ups for testing and product distribution.

  • Develop and execute testing protocols to assess the performance and durability of packaging designs.

  • Plan and direct activities pertaining to the design and development of protective packaging containers.

  • Collaborate with product development, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to integrate packaging considerations into product design and production planning.

  • Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders to understand their requirements and priorities related to packaging.

  • Analyze and interpret testing and materials data to solve technical packaging problems.

  • Consult with purchasing, production departments, and external vendors to determine costs and feasibility of producing proposed packaging.

  • Demonstrate project leadership skills and use technical background to reach relevant conclusions to meet customer needs and opportunities.

  • Continue to develop technical expertise to broaden knowledge within related fields to enhance individual performance.

  • Maintain accurate documentation related to packaging specifications, design revisions, and testing procedures.

  • Collaborate with suppliers or develop new supplier relationships and strategies to optimize packaging for timely and efficient handling within Snap-on facilities.

  • Analyze freight claims to identify packaging improvements.

  • Participate in RCI activities to reduce time and expense in the packaging process.




Qualifications



Requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Master's degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 to 10 years of experience in packaging design and development for high to medium volume products in a manufacturing environment.

  • CAD software proficiency and familiarity with packaging design tools and techniques.

  • Detail oriented with a commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement.

  • Ability to complete projects using regulatory requirements, industry standards, basic theory, engineering principles, investigative techniques, analysis, and sound judgment.

  • Excellent communication skills, collaborates effectively with cross-functional teams.


Experience with:



  • Highly structured packaging standards, including testing validations, bar code/ RFID identification.

  • Design for premium brands, including point of sale and logistics durability for shipping.

  • Experience with a variety of packaging materials including corrugated, paperboard, tapes, wraps, shrink & stretch films, vacuum & thermoforming, labels, printing, and pallets.

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, distribution, and sustainability principles.

  • Packaging test standards and Hazmat regulations.
