Job Description:

Columbia Forest Products, North America's largest manufacturer of hardwood plywood and hardwood veneer products, is searching for leaders to join our team! Columbia Forest Products has a Team Lead Trainee opening at our Craigsville, West Virginia facility. Manufacturing experience is preferred as well as knowledge of lean manufacturing/continuous improvement, strong communication skills (both written and verbal), and the ability to problem solve.


The intent of this role is to build the bench strength of our management team. This position will be trained in multiple departments and rewrite the training for new team leads at the same time. Once trained, when an open team lead positions come available, this position is expected to be able to fill those openings regardless of shift or department.



GENERAL DUTIES



  • Ability to manage labor per budget.

  • Coaches out of standard items.

  • Ability to utilize and implement the continuous improvement tools, particularly, 5-S, standardize work, Daily Management systems, and problem solving.

  • Track success of all continuous improvement activities.

  • Responds to and-on pulls.

  • Ability to meet or beat internal target reject rates.

  • Ability to meet or exceed cost targets.

  • Ability to meet or exceed production targets.

  • Ability to always learn C-4 or 5 why in process.

  • Ability to inventory accurately.

  • Ability to learn payroll processes.

  • Ability to understands training time tables.

  • Leads some 5S and standard work events in plant.

  • Assist Production with training of lean principles.

  • Supports Continuous Improvement manager.

  • Ability to perform standard work audits. If out of standard then task on task list.

  • Knowledge of work at a level to be able to train.

  • Must perform 5S audits. If out of standard, then task on task list.

  • Completing training as needed with team members.

  • Updates Standard work and 5S documents.

  • TPMs are a part of every position in the mill. This may include mandatory overtime for completion of TPM tasks.

  • Ability to transition into a team lead role.

  • Ability to work any shift as needed.

  • Additional duties as assigned.


SAFETY



  • All LOTO procedures are followed.

  • Reach cards filled out for upset conditions.

  • Exposed to a lot of moving gears, belts, drives, etc. Hands or other body parts cannot be placed near moving equipment unless the machine is shut off, the power shut off at the power disconnect, the power disconnect tagged, locked out, and padlocked by each person involved.

  • PPE and area appropriate gloves.

  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.


QUALITY



  • Continuously improves to help get the plant target reject percentages.

  • Understands quality targets for area.

  • Constantly striving to lower rejects.

  • Provides feedback to previous processes through quality gates and and-on pulls.


QUALIFICATIONS



  • High School Diploma or GED. 2 yr. associates degree preferred.

  • Computer proficiency. (ERP system, email, excel, word, etc.)

  • Ability to plan and perform unusual and difficult work and make decisions involving the use of considerable ingenuity.

  • Self-motivated.

  • Reliable and credible.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Lead by example.

  • Knowledge of wood species.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks.

  • Regular work with lightweight materials and occasional work with average weight materials.

  • Position must concentrate mental, visual attention while closely planning, and laying out complete work.
