Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Works under the general direction of the Aviation Shop Supervisor and is responsible for servicing, inspecting, cleaning, repairing, and returning City-owned helicopters to service. Maintains the Division’s aircraft in accordance with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules and regulations. Replaces or repairs worn, defective, or damaged components. Tests engine operation to identify malfunction or perform preventive maintenance. Inspects engine parts, blades, and main system components. Removes engine from aircraft, using hoist or forklift. Services, repairs, and rebuilds aircraft structures, such as rotor blades, transmission, fuselage rigging, and surface and hydraulic controls. Adjusts, repairs, or replaces electrical wiring system and aircraft accessories such as the aviation radio system and visual flight rules equipment. Reads, interprets and updates manufacturers' maintenance manuals, service bulletins, and other specifications to determine feasibility and methods of repair. Prepares and maintains documentation related to work activities in accordance with regulations. Services and maintains aircraft and related apparatus by performing activities, such as oil and fuel filters and lubricating moving parts. Maintains proficiency on certifications, inspection methods, tools and techniques used while servicing the aircraft.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:

1. Performs additional functions (essential or otherwise) which may be assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing. Must have the ability to climb up and down and lift heavy objects while servicing the aircraft. Must have the ability to interpret blueprints and instructional manuals while making necessary repairs. Must have the ability operate various hand tools, power tools, gauges, and testing equipment.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed primarily in an aircraft shop environment. Mechanics may be exposed to noise, fumes, dust, and fuel. Involves contact with staff and Police Officers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduate or equivalent. Must possess a current valid Airframe and Power plant license issued in accordance with 14 CFR Parts 43 and 65 with three (3) years experience maintaining Bell 206B and Eurocopter AS350 helicopters; with one (1) of the three (3) years overhauling components on the Bell 206B; or any combination of experience or training which enables one to perform the essential job functions. Must furnish own aircraft hand tools.
