What Motivates You

The Performance Engineer position is recognized as one of the best technical roles in the company. This position will focus on machine performance for the Hydraulic Mining Shovels product group. Machine platforms will include diesel and AC-powered shovels for legacy, current, and future products. You will serve as a consultant and technical expert on projects and assignments that make significant contributions relating to Caterpillar's core technologies. You will have superior communication skills - both written and verbal - that range from operational and technical discussions to dealer and executive presentations. Product influence expands to machine concepts and product line concepts. You will play a key role in shaping how the HMS product line delivers value to customers through performance and efficiency improvements in the mine's primary loading tool. In addition to demonstrating a mastery of engineering concepts, this position will be expected to lead projects and programs to completion.

What you will do:

  • Collaborate with Virtual Product Development (VPD) engineers to develop and deploy processes, tools, and technologies for performance simulations and analysis.
  • Establish technical and performance requirements and specifications for new products using VPD simulations and analysis. Engage with internal and external partners to gain acceptance for key requirements and specifications. Cascade requirements to system teams.
  • Develop overall performance acceptance criteria for the product; work closely with hydraulic system, powertrain, engine, and undercarriage engineers to use VPD tools to perform concept feasibility analysis on key components, sub-system, system, and control technology options, and recommend a prime path.
  • Support machine technical leads with VPD results for decision making; improve current product quality using data and analysis results comparisons.
  • Support sales and service teams; ensure data accuracy in the Value Simulation Tool (VST), catdealer.com and other sales & marketing information; ensure on-site productivity studies deliver technical and commercial value; gather and analyze available data on competitive machines to ensure Caterpillar HMS maintains performance and productivity differentiation.
  • Own HMS Application Profile and Composite Workcycle; Leverage telematics data to continue to develop and inform duty cycle information as an input to the design process.
  • Own machine response to events and diagnostics.
What Skills you will have:

Technical Excellence: Strong technical leadership skills with extensive experience in the performance and application of mining shovels or excavators. Extensive understanding of complex engineering concepts and applications, electro-hydraulic system design and/or test, and control theory.

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of performance problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

Problem Solving: Knowledge of approaches, tools, techniques for recognizing, anticipating, and resolving organizational, operational or process problems; ability to apply knowledge of problem solving appropriately to diverse situations.

Effective Communications: Strong communication, leadership, project management, and business management skills. Direct work with internal process partners, suppliers, customers, and dealers requires the incumbent to demonstrate skill in negotiation, building consensus, and achieving compromise.

Accuracy and Attention to Detail: Understanding the necessity and value of accuracy; ability to complete tasks with high levels of precision.

Top candidates will also have:

Project Management: Knowledge of effective project management strategies and tactics; ability to plan, organize, monitor, and control projects, ensuring efficient utilization of technical and administrative resources to achieve project objectives.

Engineering Tools: Knowledge of tools and techniques of specialized engineering programs; ability to produce, analyze, simulate and test design concepts using tools like DYNASTY and C-Link.

Education Requirement: Bachelor's degree in an accredited Engineering, Computer Science, or Materials Science curriculum.

The primary location for this position is Tucson, AZ.
