Job Description:

Community service officers (CSOs) on college campuses patrol to maintain safety, assist during emergencies, control access to buildings, manage crowds, and provide escort services. They also perform service functions such as access control and personnel check-in.



Daily Operations




  • Key handling and access granting: Utilizing their keysets, CSOs assist individuals with access to certain areas. They utilize a documented security log to vet guests entering their designated post and record their access into the facility.

  • Communication and documentation: CSOs are often responsible for documenting incidents, writing reports, and maintaining accurate records of their activities and observations. They collaborate with campus security personnel, local law enforcement agencies, and other campus stakeholders to address safety concerns and coordinate responses to incidents. CSOs communicate emergencies, calls for services, crimes and other unordinary events to dispatch utilizing their radios.


  • Crime Prevention and safety management: CSOs often patrol designated areas of the campus on foot. They may be trained to respond to emergencies such as medical incidents, fires, or natural disasters, providing assistance until professional emergency services arrive. They may offer escort services to students and staff, especially during late hours or in dimly lit areas, to ensure safe passage to their destinations. During events or gatherings, CSOs may assist in managing crowds, ensuring safety protocols are followed, and responding to any disturbances or conflicts.




Required Skills



The ideal candidate for a campus security position possesses a comprehensive knowledge of safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and relevant laws. They exhibit understanding of diversity awareness and cultural sensitivity, alongside exceptional verbal and written communication skills. With strong conflict resolution and de-escalation abilities, they can handle challenging situations effectively. Their sharp observation skills enable them to identify security threats and safety hazards swiftly. They demonstrate the capacity to make quick and effective decisions while maintaining composure under pressure. Physical fitness and stamina are essential for patrolling duties, complemented by basic computer skills for report writing and record-keeping. Adaptability to varied shifts and holidays is crucial, reflecting integrity and trustworthiness in handling confidential information. Moreover, they maintain a customer service orientation, offering assistance and support to the campus community.



Required Education and Experience



High School or equivalent and 3 -12 months security work experience or equivalent experience, and possession of an unarmed guard license form the Tennessee Bureau of Commerce and Insurance highly recommended. Must be at least 18 years of age, have a good moral character.
