Job Description:

The incumbent in this position is member of the MedFlight transportation service. Together with a Flight RN they are responsible for transporting patients within our service region via air and ground ambulance to and from a variety of health care facilities. Responsible for assisting with patient care tasks in accordance with scope of practice and under the direction or supervision of the Flight RN and/or physician. Provides direct and indirect patient care. Communicates with physicians/Registered Nurse/Nurse Manager/co-workers, as appropriate about changes in patient's clinical condition including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. Is able to respond quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.


Essential Job Functions
• Performs patient care during air and ground medical transports within the defined scope of practice for specific education/certification level and as directed or supervised by the charge nurse and/or physician. Complies with applicable State of Montana rules and regulations, MedFlight protocols, policies and procedures.
• Ensures adequate inventory and cleanliness of equipment in flight packs. Informs appropriate personnel of equipment needing repair and initiates work requisitions.
• Participates in mandatory on-call rotations and actively participates in covering the staffing needs of the department.
Utilizes performance improvement principles to assess and improve quality.
• Identifies needs and sets goals for own growth and development; meets all mandatory organizational and departmental requirements.
• Ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessments as per unit care area statement.
• Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain
• Ability to perform, interprets, and takes appropriate action on waived testing (point-of-care testing) per Clinical Laboratory's standards

Minimum Qualifications
Education
• AAS In Paramedic Medicine


Experience
• 3 years of prior experience in an applicable field within the last 5 years


Certifications and Licenses
• Montana license/certification as a Paramedic
• National Registration as a Paramedic


Other Requirements
• Current Montana Drivers license and the ability to be insured to operate BC vehicles
• Must be free of motion sickness or free from a reoccurring history of motion sickness, due to flying in either a plane or helicopter, which may interfere with patient care of a critical patient with limited personnel available.
• Must be able to perform minimum qualifications of MedFlight EMT - Basic/Intermediate Level I, MedFlight EMT- Paramedic Level II
• Additional scope of practice responsibilities:
• Basic and Advanced airway maneuvers, including intubation, LMA, video layngoscopy, and cricothyroidotomy
• Basic Ventilator equipment knowledge, utilization and troubleshooting
• Medication knowledge and administration
• Pharmacology indications/contraindications/side effects
• IV Medication administration per protocol
• Critical care Medications including ACLS drugs, vasoactive medications
• IV Pump knowledge/utilization
• 12- Lead EKG knowledge/interpretation/communication
• Stroke knowledge/identification/communication
• Flight safety training/competencies for prehospital safety/conditions, air ambulance (rotor/fixed) safety/accident protocol and responsibilities
• Height & weight requirement: In order to be eligible for employment, Body Mass Index (BMI) must not exceed 30 and ir the maximum weight for an individual crewmember must not exceed 230 pounds. Body fat percentage and frame size should be taken into consideration. Since a BMI of greater than 25 is considered overweight, it will be recommended that MedFlight clinical crewmembers who transport patients have a BMI that falls between 25 to 30 seek dietary counseling, this includes consultation with occupational health. Maximum weight and or BMI is necessary for flight planning purposes to ensure safe operational aircraft performance.
• Ability to maintain a body weight of 230 pounds or less (including: vest, radio, pager, helmet, parka, boots, duty-ready flight suit)
• Weight to be rechecked every six months - with six months for overweight correction with monthly weighing during interim period
